Parappur Kurumbakavu Temple – Thalappoli Festival

Parappur Kurumbakavu temple is located at Parappur in Malappuram district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi. The shrine is also known as Parappur Kurumba Temple. The annual Thalappoli festival in the temple is held in Kumbha Masam.

The festival begins with the Kavunarthal ritual. This is followed by Usha Pooja, Kavungu Ezhunellippu, Uccha Puja and Prasada Ottu.

The highlight of the Parappur Kurumba Kavu temple thalappoli festival is the famous Kala Varavu. The Kala Varavu begins with the arrival of the Kala of Kanakkarayi family to the kavu. Then Kala arrives from various desoms in the region. The regions that participate in the Kala Varavu includes –

കൊയ്യാർ, കൈപ്പള്ളിക്കുണ്ട്, ചീനിപ്പടി, ചുടലപ്പാറ, കുളത്തിങ്ങൽ, ചെറുകുന്ന്, നായടിപ്പാറ, കിളിയംകുന്ന്മാട്, പാറമ്മൽ, അരിച്ചോൾ, ഞാറത്തടം, ആട്ടീരി കാച്ചടിപ്പാറ, ചങ്കുവെട്ടിക്കുന്ന്.

Other rituals on the day include Elamaram natal, kalamezhuthu, sandhya vela, thayambaka and rituals by velichappadu or oracle.

The pujas and rituals on the day concludes with Purathekkezhunellipu at night and Kalam puja.

The next day rituals begin at 1:00 AM with thayambaka. Velichappadu, Bhootamkali, Thalappoli Vadakkan Vathukkal karmam, ariyeru, nayattu purappadu, dandunattal, ozhukkal and Ariyalavu are some of the rituals on the day.

The festival concludes at noon when Goddess arrives back at the sreekovil. The festival ends with the closing of the doors of sreekovil.
