Koodali Poovathur Sri Mahavishnu Temple – Festival

Koodali Poovathur Sri Mahavishnu Temple is located at Koodali in Kannur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Bhagavan Vishnu and Goddess Poovathoor Amma (Goddess Durga). The 7-day annual Pongala festival is held in Makara Masam and the Pongala ritual is held on the Makara Sankramana day.

The annual festival is famous for various rituals held in Vishnu temples. The festival concludes with Arattu ceremony.

The temple is also one among the 108 Durga temples in Kerala. As per history, the temple was initially a Durga shrine but for some reason the Devi worship was stopped and Vishnu worship was started. In 2010 CE, a Durga Shrine was constructed a murti of Durga was consecrated here. 

The sankalpam of Mahavishnu is that of Krishna who has killed Shishupala and he is holding the sudarshana chakra.

The upa devata worshipped in the temple are Ganapathi and Srichakram.

The temple has a chuttambalam, two tier chathura sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, kodimaram and pond.

There are some beautiful sculptures in the temple.

Morning Puja and Darshan Timings are from 5:30 AM to 10 AM
Evening Puja and Darshan Timings are from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM

First Friday of every Malayalam month Timing

5:30 AM to 12:30 PM AM.
5:30 PM to 8 PM.

The first Friday of every Malayalam month there is Maha Ganapati homam, Annadanam, nama pradakshinam and chuttu vilakku.

The annual pratishta dinam festival in the temple is held in Kumbha Masam.
