Chennithala Chala Mahadeva Temple – Festival

Chennithala Chala Mahadeva temple is located at Chennithala near Mavelikara in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadevar. An important festival in the temple is the annual Mahashivratri in Kumbha Masam (February – March).

A Shivling is worshipped in a square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil. The deity faces west. The shrine has a nalambalam and namaskara mandapam. There are separate shrines of Upa Devatas, which includes Ganapathi, Devi, Ayyappa and Subramanya.

The annual festival in the temple is famous for dhara, homam and other pujas and rituals observed in Shiva temples in South Kerala. Kala, huge effigies of ox, are pulled to the temple on the occasion of the annual festival.

The temple also observes Ramayana Masam, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Mandala Kalam, Thrikarthika and Thiruvathira.
