Karippadavathu Kavu temple is located at Kurichithanam in Marangattupilly village in Kottayam district, Kerala. There are three main deities in the temple – Goddess Durga, Goddess Bhadrakali and Shiva. Importance is given to Bhadrakali. The darshan of the temple is towards west.
Shiva prathishta is in between Goddess Durga and Goddess Kali. It is believed that the Shivling was installed much later and originally the temple only had the two powerful forms of Goddess Shakti.
The uranma of the temple are with Kakkarupilli and Madom. The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Yakshi, Akilayakshi, Rakshas, Nagarajavu, Sarpangal and Anthimahakalan. The Balithara in the western nada is dedicated to Vanadurga and Adivasis visit the spot. On the first day of Vrischikam month (Vrischikam 1), Adivasis of the region arrive with fresh farm produce and make offerings to Vanadurga. They arrive in a procession.
The annual festival in the temple is held on Bharani nakshatra in Kumbham month (Kumbha Bharani). Another important festival is Meena Bharani. Other important festivals held in the temple are Shivratri and Navratri.
- പെരുന്താനം, ഉഴവൂർ, കുടക്കച്ചിറ, പാലക്കാട്ടുമല, നെല്ലിത്താനത്തു മല, ആണ്ടൂർ, മരങ്ങാട്ടുപള്ളി, കുര്യനാട്, കുറിച്ചിത്താനം എന്നീ ഒൻപതു കരക്കാരുടെ കുലദൈവമാണ് ഈ ഭഗവതി.
- ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ദേവീചൈതന്യത്തെ ധ്യാനിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മഠം ശ്രീധരൻ നമ്പൂതിരി രചിച്ചതാണ് സുപ്രസിദ്ധമായ അംബികാഷ്ട പ്രാസം .ആ കവി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു വർഷക്കാലം ഭജന മനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു.
- ഇവിടുത്തെ ആറുനാഴിപ്പായസം പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ഒരു പ്രത്യേക കൂട്ടിലുള്ള ഈ പായസം നിത്യവുമെന്നോണം ഇവിടെ നിവേദിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
- വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്ന് - ഇന്നേദിവസംഹരിജനങ്ങളുടെ കോലടികളി, തലയാട്ടംകളി, വെളിച്ചപ്പാടുതുള്ളൽ, കൊട്ടും പാട്ടും എന്നിവയൊക്കെ മുറതെറ്റാതെ നടക്കും.
- പടിഞ്ഞാറേ നടയിലുള്ള ബലിത്തറ ആദിമനിവാസികളുടെ വനദുർഗ്ഗാ സങ്കല്പമാണ്. ഇപ്പോഴും വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്നിന് അവരുടെ പിന്തുടർച്ചക്കാർ സ്ത്രീ പുരുഷ ഭേദമെന്യേ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്താറുണ്ട്. കതിർ കറ്റകളേന്തി, പാട്ടും, തലയാട്ടം കളിയുമായിസ്ത്രീകളും, കോലടികളിയോടെ പുരുഷന്മാരും ഒഴുകിയെത്തുമ്പോൾ അതൊരു കാർഷികോത്സവമായി മാറും. ഒരു വിളവെടുപ്പുത്സവത്തിൻറെ പ്രതീതിയുളവാക്കുന്നതാണ് പരിപാടികളെല്ലാം.
