Arayukulangara Sree Krishna Swami Temple On Perumbalam Island In Alappuzha – Festival - History

Arayukulangara Sree Krishna Swami temple is located on Perumbalam Island in Alappuzha district, Kerala. Arayukulangara Sree Krishna Swami temple festival 2024 date is March 1 to March 8. Sri Krishna in Balagopala form is worshipped in the temple. The 8-day annual festival concludes with Arattu on the Thiruvonam Nakshatra day in Meenam month.

The annual festival is noted for traditional temple music, dance, art forms and caparisoned elephants. The final day arattu procession is noted for procession and temple music.

The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathy, Shiva, Bhagavathi, Sastha and Rakshas.

Arayukulangara Sree Krishna Swamy Temple History

It is said that the island was given to 56 Namboothiri families and 3 Nair families who had arrived here from Malabar escaping an invasion. The island was given to the families by king of Kochi.

One of the 56 Namboothiri families was the Velliyil Mana. The Mana was attacked by Portuguese captain Albuquerque. He destroyed in the Sri Krishna temple and threw the murti of Sri Krishna in a pond.

The family members of Vellyil Mana later got a murti of Balagopla form of Sri Krishna from Ambalapuzha and it was consecrated in a temple built by the Nair families of the region.
