Palappetty Sree Bhagavathy Temple Festival – History

Palappetty Sree Bhagavathy temple is located at Perumpadappu Puthanpalli stop on Chavakad – Ponnani road in Malappuram district, Kerala. The main temple festival is observed on Meena Bharani. The famous Pongala festival in the temple is observed on Makara Chowa.

The one day annual festival is noted for procession and temple folk arts like Thirayattam etc.

The murti worshiped in the temple is ‘kannadi shila vigraham’ of Goddess Bhagavathi. The sreekovil is square and the murti in the shrine faces west. The shrine is located in a four acre compound.

Palappetty Sree Bhagavathy Temple History

The temple is one among the 108 Durga temples in Kerala. The temple is mentioned as Veliyancode in Durga kshetra stotra namavali.

The Devi was the paradevata of Veliyancode village. The place named Veliyancode is around 3 km from the temple.

The present temple was renovated and the vigraham that is worshipped in the temple was consecrated after renovation.

The temple was first under the control of Ayiroor kovilakam. Then it was administered by Palapetty Nair Kudumbam.

Today, the temple is run by a committee that is selected by 10 villages in the region.
