Thichoor Ayyappa Swamy Temple - Information - Festival

Thichoor Ayyappa Swamy temple is located at Thichoor on the Pattambi – Nelluvai road in Thrissur district, Kerala. The 8-day annual festival at Thichoor Ayyappa Swamy temple begins on Vishu day with Kanikanal.

The murti of Ayyappa worshipped in the temple is swayambhu. He is worshipped along with his wife Prabha and son Satyaka. The sreekovil is in the form of the back of an elephant – Gaja Prishta. There is also a Shivling in the sreekovil of the temple. There are no Upa Devatas.

The main murti in the temple looks towards southwest (nairitya kone) but the temple faces east. It is said that Sastha in the temple is looking at a murti in the southwest corner which had conquered 22.5 deshams or areas. Another belief is that the murti is looking the treasure hidden inside the Ponnkunnu.

This is one among the 108 Ayyappa temples in Kerala. The shrine is also known as Thichoor Sastha temple.

The Sastha in the temple was one of the important upasana murtis of Manakottachan.

The temple is now maintained by the Paliyam Trust.
