As the murti is made using sand and clay, no abhishekam is
performed using water, milk, honey, sandalwood paste, coconut water or any kind
of liquid.
The usual abhishekam is performed on a small murti that is
kept in front of the main murti. All important rituals are performed on this
small murti.
The main murti of Samayapurathal or Mariamman made using
sand and clay is performed abhishekam once in a year with flowers. This
ceremony attracts more than 100,000 people and is known as poochoriyal orshowering of flowers. This is held during the last Sunday in Tamil Masi month
and subsequent Sundays in Panguni month.
The temple is also famous for devotees making offering of
replica of body parts. Those having ailments to a particular part of the body
buy a replica of the body part and deposit it in the donation box in the
temple.
