Karanja Narasimha of Upper Ahobilam – Where Hanuman Witnessed the Unity of Rama and Narasimha
Among the nine sacred shrines of Lord Narasimha in Ahobilam, the Karanja Narasimha Temple holds a unique place for its rare iconography and powerful spiritual significance. Situated about 6 km from Lower Ahobilam on the route to Upper Ahobilam, the temple lies west of the Garudathri Hill and forms an important part of the revered Nava Narasimha pilgrimage circuit.
Ahobilam in present-day Andhra Pradesh is celebrated as the place where Lord Narasimha appeared to protect Prahlada and destroy the demon Hiranyakashipu. Devotees undertake a pilgrimage through forests and hills to visit the nine forms of Narasimha worshipped here, each representing a different divine aspect of the Lord.
The Sacred Legend of Hanuman’s Penance
The Karanja Narasimha shrine is deeply connected with the devotion of Lord Hanuman. According to temple tradition, Hanuman once came to this place and undertook intense penance under a Karanja tree to obtain darshan of his beloved Lord Rama.
To test the sincerity and depth of Hanuman’s devotion, Lord Narayana appeared before him in the fierce half-man, half-lion form of Narasimha. However, Hanuman did not recognize the form as his beloved Rama. Disappointed, he declared that his Lord was the graceful prince of Ayodhya who always held a bow.
When Narasimha tried to explain that Rama, Narayana, and Narasimha were the same Supreme Being appearing in different forms, Hanuman insisted he would continue his penance until he received the vision of Rama.
Pleased with this unwavering devotion, Lord Narasimha manifested in a special form holding a bow in his left hand like Rama, while also bearing the Sudarshana Chakra like Narayana. Adisesha is also depicted above the Lord. Through this divine form, Hanuman realized that all these manifestations were one and the same Supreme Lord.
Unique Form of the Deity
The deity at Karanja Narasimha Temple is one of the rarest representations of Lord Narasimha in India. Unlike the usual fierce form, the Lord here holds a bow, symbolizing Lord Rama, while also carrying the Sudarshana Chakra, representing Lord Vishnu.
Facing the Lord is Hanuman, standing with folded hands in deep reverence. This sacred arrangement symbolizes devotion, humility, and the unity of divine forms.
The idea of the Supreme appearing in different forms is beautifully expressed in the Bhagavad Gita where Lord Krishna says:
“Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest Myself.”

Ancient Mandapam and Ahobila Mutt Tradition
Near the temple stands an impressive 600-year-old hundred-pillared mandapam. This historical structure is associated with the early Acharyas of the Ahobila Mutt. Tradition holds that the first Jeer of the Ahobila Mutt delivered spiritual discourses to disciples and devotees from this very mandapam, making it an important center of learning and devotion.
The architecture reflects the Vijayanagara style seen across many sacred sites in the region.
Importance in the Nava Narasimha Pilgrimage
Karanja Narasimha is one of the nine sacred forms worshipped in Ahobilam. Pilgrims visiting the Nava Narasimha temples consider this shrine particularly significant because it teaches the spiritual truth that all divine incarnations are manifestations of the same Supreme Being.

The temple is generally open for devotees between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Pilgrims often visit this shrine while travelling between Lower and Upper Ahobilam during the Nava Narasimha pilgrimage.
