According to temple tradition, the region was once covered by dense forest. Katti Mudali, a ruler of the area, happened to visit this land. When his soldiers attempted to tether the king’s horse at a particular spot, the horse repeatedly refused to stand there and leapt away. Sensing something extraordinary, the men dug the earth at that location and discovered a Shiva Linga beneath the soil.
Recognizing the sanctity of the site, Katti Mudali arranged for the construction and expansion of the temple. Historical records indicate that the temple structure dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, while Katti Mudali’s period falls in the 17th century. This suggests that he may have renovated or expanded an already existing sacred shrine rather than establishing it anew.
