Sri Sampangi Ramaswamy Temple is believed to be over 400 years old, dating back to the 19th century. It is said to have been built during the reign of the Mysore kings. The presiding deity, Sri Sampangiramaswamy, is believed to be a self-manifested (Udbhava) idol. The main idol depicts Lord Rama walking through Dandakaranya along with Lakshmana and Sita. This walking posture of Lord Rama is considered unique and is not seen elsewhere.
Separate idols of Shiva Linga and Ganesha have also been
installed.
A special feature of the temple is the divine vision of Lord
Ramachandra blessing Hanuman. Hanuman is shown constantly chanting the sacred
“Sri Rama Taraka Mantra,” while Lord Rama casts his compassionate glance upon
him and grants complete protection and blessings with his right hand (Abhaya
Hasta).
It is believed that by having darshan of these sacred idols,
many devotees receive the grace and blessings of the Lord.
