In the 13th century, in a small village in Vidar, Karnataka, a child was born whose life would become synonymous with devotion. From the moment of his birth, his heart beat in rhythm with the name of Lord Ganesha. Every breath, every thought, every dream flowed toward the divine. Recognizing this spiritual connection, his parents lovingly named him Moriya, inspired by Lord Moreshwar (Ganesha).
A Journey of Faith
As Moriya grew, his devotion deepened. Though living in Chinchwad, he would tirelessly walk the rugged, uneven paths to the sacred Morgaon Ganesha Temple. His devotion was so pure that the temple doors would mysteriously open on their own whenever he arrived—almost as if Lord Ganesha Himself welcomed His beloved devotee.
A Life of Simplicity and Compassion
Despite his spiritual stature, Sant Morya Gosavi lived with utmost simplicity, sustaining himself solely on alms. Yet, what little he received, he generously shared with the poor and needy.
By Ganesha’s grace, his home never lacked food—a testament to the divine bond between the Lord and His devotee.
The Miracle of the Blind Girl
One day, a blind girl was brought to Sant Morya by her distressed parents. Seeing her struggle even to walk the rocky terrain, Moriya’s heart melted with compassion. With trembling emotion, he prayed:
“Lord, not to prove Your existence, but for this child’s life… please show mercy.”
His heartfelt plea stirred the heavens.
The temple doors slowly opened, and a radiant light engulfed the surroundings. As the brilliance faded, the young girl exclaimed with surprise:
“Why are you crying?”
The people gasped—her once lifeless eyes now glowed like precious jewels, reflecting the sun. Sant Morya wept, but his tears were of gratitude.
The air rang with chants of “Jai Jai Ganesha!” as the miracle blessed the land.
A Divine Son
Pleased with the unwavering devotion of Sant Morya, Lord Ganesha bestowed upon him a divine gift—a son named Chintamani, believed to be a manifestation of Ganesha Himself.
Establishing the Mangalmurti Temple
As age weakened his body, Sant Morya found it difficult to travel to Morgaon. One night, Lord Ganesha appeared in his dream:
“Build a temple in Chinchwad. I will come to give darshan.”
Soon after, while bathing in the river, Sant Morya witnessed a divine vision: Lord Ganesha emerged and handed him an idol.
Thus, the sacred Mangalmurti Wara Temple was established, fulfilling the Lord’s promise.
The Eternal Samadhi
When the time came, Sant Morya heard the divine call. He entered deep meditation and attained spiritual completion (Samadhi). His son Chintamani built a temple at the very site of this sacred moment—today known as Sanjeevani Mandir, a revered pilgrimage destination.
The Legacy in a Chant
Lord Ganesha, ever grateful to His devotee, ensured that Moriya’s name would live eternally.
Even today, when millions chant:
“Ganapati Bappa… Morya!”
they unknowingly honor Sant Morya Gosavi—the devotee whose life became inseparable from the name of the Lord.
This is the true essence of devotion:
When the Lord and His devotee become one in the hearts of the people.
