Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple, Bantwal – A Sacred Abode on the Banks of Nethravathi

Nestled in the heart of Bantwal town, along the serene banks of the Nethravathi River, lies the magnificent and ancient Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple. With an estimated history of over 800 years, this sacred shrine is a prominent and spiritually powerful Shaiva temple in the Dakshina Kannada region of Karnataka. Despite the absence of epigraphic records (shasanas), the temple is widely revered and continues to draw thousands of devotees year-round.

  • To the east, a sacred Ashwatha (Peepal) tree platform and Naga stones (serpent worship icons) can be found.

  • The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses the Shiva Linga, facing east, symbolizing auspiciousness and divine energy.

  • The idol of Lord Mahaganapathi, installed in 1898 by Sri Panambur Subbaraya, is uniquely west-facing and serves as the Vighna Vinashaka (remover of obstacles).

  • It is believed that the original installation was a Kharasura Pratishtita – attributed to the demon Kharasura, suggesting its ancient sanctity.

  • The temple is one of the oldest and most well-known Shiva Kshetras (holy abodes of Shiva) along the Nethravathi.

  • Daily Poojas: Include Amrutha Padi (ritualistic bath), Naivedya (food offerings), Deepaaradhane (lamp worship), and Nitya Vinayoga (daily services).

  • Special Abhishekas: Conducted especially on Mondays, such as:

    • Rudrabhisheka

    • Nirabhisheka (water offering)

    • Dharapathrabhisheka (continuous water flow offering)

  • In 2006, the Garbhagriha (sanctum) and Teertha Mantapa (sacred hall) were reconstructed with intricate stone carvings.

  • In 2015, the temple’s surrounding corridor (Sutthupouli) was renovated with beautiful sculptural work.

  • Celebrated on Amavasya (new moon) in the Karthika month, this festival includes:

    • Laksha Deepotsava (lighting of one lakh lamps)

    • Devara Bali Utsava (ceremonial offering)

🌙 Maha Shivaratri

  • A sacred tradition where devotees draw pure water from the Nethravathi River and offer Nirabhisheka to Lord Shiva with deep devotion. This event draws large crowds and is one of the highlights of the temple calendar.
