Onappottan Theyyam is a unique theyyam that is seen only during the Onam season in Kannur and Kozhikode regions of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam does not open its mouth. As he does not speak, he is known as ‘pottan’ in Malayalam language and as he appears during the Onam period he is known as Onapottan. As per Onapottan, story he is King Mahabali who was a just king famous for his just and prosperous rule.
Members of Malaya community adorn this theyyam. The popular belief is that Onapottam represents King Mahabali who comes once in a year to see his subjects.
The theyyam holds a traditional Kerala style umbrella. The
theyyam has a unique hair style and beard.
The theyyam visits homes and prays for peace and prosperity.
The theyyam receives rice and money as donation.
മുഖത്ത് ചായവും, കുരുത്തോലക്കുട, കൈത നാരു കൊണ്ട് തലമുടി, കിരീടം, കൈവള, പ്രത്യേക രീതിയിലുള്ള ഉടുപ്പ് എന്നീ ആടയാഭരണങ്ങള്‍ ആണ് ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്റെ വേഷ വിധാനം. താളും ചവിട്ടുകയും ഓടുകയും ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും കാലു നിലത്ത് ഉറപ്പിക്കില്ല. ദക്ഷിണയായി അരിയും പണവും സ്വീകരിക്കും.
വാ മൂടിയ അലങ്കാരമാണ് ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്‍റേത്. സംസാരിക്കാത്ത ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ മണി കിലുക്കിയാണ് തന്‍റെയും ഓണത്തിന്‍റെയും വരവറിയിക്കുന്നത്. ഓണേശ്വരന്‍ എന്നും ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മഹാബലിയുടെ രൂപമാണ് ഇതെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
ഉത്രാടത്തിനാണ് പ്രധാനമായും ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ വീടുകളില്‍ സന്ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തുക. അകമ്പടിയായി ചെണ്ടമേളവുമുണ്ടാകും. കുരുത്തോല തൂക്കിയ ഓലക്കുടയും പിടിച്ചാണ് ഓണപ്പൊട്ടൻ വരിക. ഓണപ്പൊട്ടന്റെ സന്ദർശനം വീടിന് ഐശ്വര്യമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നുവെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഓണപ്പൊട്ടിന് വീടുകളില്‍ നിന്നും ദക്ഷിണയായി അരിയും പണവുമെല്ലാം നല്‍കും. മഹാബലിയാണ് ഓണത്തപ്പന്റെ വേഷത്തില്‍ വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്നതെന്നാണ് മലബാറുകാരുടെ വിശ്വാസം.
