Unique Brinjal Food Offering At Chidambaram Nataraja Temple

Brinjal thick grave or Kattarikkay gothsu or gosthu is a unique food offering or naivedyam at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple in Tamil Nadu. The food offering is made using two types of native brinjals – small round brinjals or striped long violet brinjals. This unique offering is served to Nataraja along with samba sadam during the evening puja.

For the naivedyam offering, brinjal is sliced, fried, mashed to a pulp and then boiled in a tamarind extract. The tamarind extract is spiced up with roasted powdered coriander seeds, black pepper and asafetida.

Food offerings at Chidambaram Nataraja temple is performed six times daily. The main offering are pepper rice, sweet pongal made using rock sugar or kalkandam, curd rice, samba sadam, coconut rice, rice mixed with milk and payasam.
