A King Bound by Destiny and Dharma
King Drupada of Panchala stands as one of the most poignant figures in the Kurukshetra War. Once a close friend of Drona in their youth, Drupada later became his sworn enemy after being humiliated by him. This personal rivalry shaped much of Drupada’s destiny and ultimately led him to play a critical role in the great war described in the Mahabharata.
Aligned with the Pandavas, Drupada brought vast resources, seasoned warriors, and the formidable Panchala army to their cause. His loyalty was unwavering, especially after the marriage alliance between his daughter Draupadi and the Pandavas. Recognizing his valor and experience, Bhishma classified Drupada as a Maharathi, a title reserved for the most elite warriors capable of fighting thousands simultaneously.

On the very first day of the war, Drupada engaged Jayadaratha, the king of Sindhu, in a fierce duel. The battle was long and intense, marked by showers of arrows and repeated charges. Though Drupada displayed great courage and skill, he was eventually overpowered and forced to withdraw from the battlefield. This retreat did not diminish his stature, for many great warriors faced reversals in the opening days of the war.

One of the darkest moments for Drupada came during the night following the fourteenth day of the war. In the chaos of nocturnal combat, he encountered Vrishasena, the son of Karna. After a brutal engagement, Drupada was defeated and rendered unconscious. He was carried away from the field, but tragedy followed swiftly, as Vrishasena went on to massacre a large portion of the Panchala army, dealing a severe blow to Drupada’s forces.
Death at the Hands of Drona
Drupada met his end on the fifteenth day of the war in a direct confrontation with Drona. The battle between them was intense and deeply emotional, marked by a prolonged sword fight. Already weakened by previous wounds, Drupada was finally struck down by Drona. After the battle, Drona is described as saluting Drupada’s fallen body with tears in his eyes, lamenting that fate had compelled him to kill his former friend.
