Sri Shakuna Ranganathaswamy Temple Sakharayapatna Chikmagalur - History - Pujas - Rituals

Sri Shakuna Ranganathaswamy Temple is located in the central part of Sakharayapatna village, in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka. The shrine is dedicated to the Ranganatha Swamy form of Bhagavan Vishnu. The shrine is not only a place of worship but also a heritage site rich in history, architecture, jatre chariot festival and living traditions, deeply rooted in local faith and cultural practices.

Historical Background

  • This temple dates back to the 11th century.

  • It is believed to have been built during the reign of Hoysala King Ballala II.

  • According to local legend, in the 16th century, the idol of Sri Shakuna Ranganatha Swamy was brought from a place called Shakunagiri and installed here.

Fort and Unique Features

  • A fort stands directly in front of the temple.

  • On this fort is said to be the third-largest cannon in the state.

  • Over time, several local chieftains (Palegars) have renovated and maintained the temple.

  • The temple features beautiful stone pillars.

  • There are inscriptions (shasanas) found:

    • On the pillar of Sri Chennakeshava

    • On the Garuda pillar (Garuda Kamba)

These inscriptions reflect the temple’s historical and cultural significance.
