Kumbh Mela 2027 – Nashik & Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra) - Simhastha Kumbha Mela

The Kumbh Mela at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar, known as Simhastha, is one of the four sacred Kumbh gatherings in India and is held once every 12 years in Maharashtra. This grand spiritual congregation takes place on the banks of the holy Godavari River. The main bathing dates during Kumbh Mela 2027 are August 2, August 31 and September 11 and September 12.

The festival is organized when specific planetary alignments occur — when Jupiter enters Leo (Simha Rashi) and the Sun and Moon are in Cancer (Karka Rashi). Under this auspicious celestial configuration, millions of devotees, saints, and ascetics gather for the sacred ritual bath (Shahi Snan).

Unique Feature of Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Kumbh

This Kumbh is distinct from the gatherings at Prayagraj, Haridwar, and Ujjain. At those locations, Vaishnava and Shaiva Akhadas bathe together.

However, at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar, the bathing rituals are conducted separately:

  • Vaishnava Akhadas perform the holy dip at Nashik.

  • Shaiva (Sanyasi) and Udasin Akhadas bathe at Trimbakeshwar.

This arrangement dates back to the time of the Peshwas, who instituted the separation after clashes between ascetics of the two sects to maintain harmony and order.

Spiritual Significance

Nashik is traditionally believed to be part of the ancient forest of Dandakaranya, where Rama spent a portion of his exile according to the Ramayana.

Trimbakeshwar is home to the revered Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The sacred Brahmagiri Hills near Trimbakeshwar is considered the origin point of the Godavari River, making the region spiritually significant.

Trimbakeshwar is also associated with Nivruttinath, whose samadhi (memorial shrine) is located here. He is regarded as an important figure in the Nath tradition and spiritual lineage.

The Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Kumbh thus combines astronomical significance, Vaishnava and Shaiva tradition, Sanatan heritage, and deep spiritual reverence, making it one of the most distinctive and sacred Kumbh gatherings in India.
