Medinipur Lachhipoddar Kalibari Kali Puja 2026

Numerous stories and legends are associated with the worship of Goddess Kali in this land of Bengal! One such example is the Lachhipoddar Kalibari in the present-day Medinipur town. The Kali puja here is famous for unique rituals. Medinipur Lachhipoddar Kalibari Kali Puja 2026 date is November 8.

According to local legend, this Kali temple and the deity were established approximately 400 years ago.

The initiation of the Kali Puja here was done by Lakshminarayan De, the head of the associated De family. It is said that the Goddess herself gave Lakshminarayan a divine command in a dream for the construction of her temple and the beginning of the worship!

In that divine dream, it was said that Goddess Kali would manifest herself! Her presence would be understood by the sound of anklets (nupur). Where that sound ceased, the temple and the idol were to be established.

As per local folklore, within a few days of receiving this divine command, family members heard the sound of anklets in the middle of the night!

The arrangements for the worship of Goddess Kalika were made at the very spot where the sound stopped. The puja has been taking place ever since.

At that time, the temple of the Goddess was established in Habibpur in undivided Medinipur.

Following the Goddess's instructions, even today, 108 kg of rice—equivalent to the year-long sustenance of an unmarried daughter—is offered during the puja.

The Goddess has been worshipped in the Lachhipoddar Kalibari in this manner for the past few centuries.
