The temple of Khepi Ma is one of Bengal’s famous Kali temples. It is located in Katwa, in the Purba Bardhaman district. Devotees believe that the goddess here is very powerful and ever-awakened. Khepi Ma Temple Story
The presiding deity of this temple is known as ‘Khepi Ma’ or
‘Khyapa Kali’. According to local legend, a woman devotee of Kali—who was
somewhat eccentric or mad in her devotion—first began the worship here. From
her, the goddess got this name.
Another version mentions a local Kali devotee named Naren
Khyapa from the nearby Malopara area, who is also associated with the origin of
the temple.
Yet another legend connects the temple with bandits. It is
believed that several hundred years ago, this area was a dense forest. At that
time, a notorious dacoit used to worship the Goddess here before setting out
for his robberies.
It is also said that the forest on the banks of the Bhagirathi
River served as a hideout for dacoits. The bandit chief, to evade the police,
used to hide the idol of Kali. It is believed that the goddess worshipped by
that bandit is the same deity now revered as Khepi Ma.
Today, of course, that once-dense forest has become a
populated area. A grand temple now stands in the Khyapa Kali neighborhood. The
dacoits are gone, but the worship continues with great pomp and devotion.

Every year, during Kali Puja, the idol is adorned with gold and silver jewelry.
The image of the Mother is decorated with about 5 kilograms of gold and 9

Although the worship is said to have been started by
dacoits, it now takes place under tight police security. On the day of Kali
Puja, armed police guard the jewelry, which is brought from the bank locker and

responsive deity. No one returns empty-handed after praying to her; she
