In Purulia, Bengal, Biswakarma is observed not on September 17 along with other places in Bengal but on Saraswati Puja day – the fifth day during the waxing phase of moon in Magh month. For over a hundred years, Vishwakarma Puja has been celebrated on Shri Panchami in the month of Magh in Purulia. In 2026, Purulia Biswakarma Puja is on January 23.
Purulia Biswakarma is a four-day-long festival and begins on
Magha Shukla Paksha Panchami. It was initiated by local Sutradhars
(carpenters or artisans), and the reason, once again, lies in the busy Durga
Puja period. Owing to their heavy workload during Durga Puja preparations, they
could not celebrate Vishwakarma Puja in Bhadra (September 17) — and so, they began to hold it
in winter instead.
Likewise, In Begampur Area Of Chanditala, Hooghly, the Biswakarma Puja is held from for four days starting on Poush Shukla Paksha Navami. The weaver communities of Gopinathpur in Bankura, and Santipur and Phulia in Nadia also perform Vishwakarma Puja in the month of Poush.
