Malaikovil of Erode – The 36 Feet Balamurugan of Kasipalayam
The Kasipalayam Malaysia Murugan Temple, popularly known as Malaikovil or Bala Murugan Temple, is a prominent hill shrine located in Kasipalayam near Erode in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, also revered as Subrahmanian, the temple is especially noted for its towering 36 feet tall image of Murugan. The idol is modeled after the famous Murugan statue at Batu Caves in Malaysia, and hence the temple is often referred to as the Malaysia Murugan Temple of Erode.
Believed to be around 100 years old, this shrine has grown into an important spiritual center for devotees in and around Erode district.
The Hill Temple and Architecture
The temple stands atop a small rocky hill, approximately 60 feet high, and faces east. Devotees ascend nearly 100 steps constructed from the base to reach the sanctum. At the entrance to the steps, Sri Vinayagar sannidhi is situated on the right, where devotees first offer prayers before climbing.
The steps are adorned with stucco images of peacocks and sages in meditation, symbolizing devotion and spiritual discipline. Just below the end of the steps is the Idumban sannidhi, recalling the traditional association of Idumban with Murugan hill temples.
At the summit, the temple complex houses three main sannidhis for Murugan, Shiva, and Ambal. In the mandapam, Sri Rajalingeswarar is enshrined on the left, while Sri Swarnambigai is on the right side of Sri Bala Murugan.
In front of the sanctum are the dwajasthambam, balipeedam, and the peacock vahana. In the garbhagriha, Murugan stands majestically with two hands: the right in abhaya hastam (gesture of protection) and the left in kadi hastam. The peacock, His vahana, is positioned behind Him facing south.
Other Shrines and Symbolism
Within the mandapam are shrines for Selva Vinayagar, Palliyarai, Brahma, Chandikeswarar, Nagars, Bairavar, and Navagrahas. The ceiling beams feature stucco depictions of Murugan’s Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes traditionally associated with His divine manifestations. Muneeswarar with Saptakannis are also worshipped here.
Murugan’s grace as protector and granter of wisdom is celebrated in the Skanda Purana. A well known verse declares:
"Yasya smarana matrena janma samsara bandhanat vimuchyate namas tasmai Subrahmanyaya te namah."
(Skanda Purana)
Meaning: By mere remembrance of Him, one is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence; salutations to Subrahmanya.
This spirit of devotion is deeply reflected in the worship at this temple.
Pujas and Festivals
Apart from daily pujas, special rituals are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya, Thaipoosam, Kandar Sashti, Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, and Kiruthigai. Thaipoosam and Kandar Sashti attract large gatherings, with devotees observing fasts and offering special prayers.
The temple remains open from 6.00 am to 12.00 noon and from 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm. On Tuesdays and festival days, it remains open continuously without a break.
Today, the Kasipalayam Malaysia Murugan Temple stands as a serene hill shrine where devotees seek courage, wisdom, and divine blessings from Bala Murugan.
