Kanakathur Sree Kurumbakkavu temple is located in Kannur town in Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Kurumba. The shrine has a history for more than thousand years. The annual theyyam kaliyattam festival in the temple is held from Kumbha 28 to Meenam 1 as per traditional Malayalam Calendar (March 11 or March 12 to March 15 or March 16). The story of Kanakathur Sree Kurumbakkavu temple is that of the deity appears one earth after annihilating demon Darikasura.
Kanakathur Sree Kurumbakkavu Temple Story
She reaches decked up with full ornaments at the present
Kanakathur region. She was enamored by the beauty of the place and she took
rest under a coconut tree. A toddy tapper named Eyyanadan Divyan was sitting
atop the coconut tree and doing his work. Water and toddy and its bubbles fell
on Goddess. On notice a divine woman below the tree, the Divyan got down and
asked for forgiveness. The Goddess asked for tender coconut water. Divyan
climbed the tree and gave her two tender coconuts. But the thirst of Devi was
not quenched she asked for more and finally her thirst was quenched by 21
tender coconuts.
The Divyan was mercilessly punished by the owner the land
for plucking tender coconuts without his permission. He was beaten badly and hung
to death at Eshan Para. Vultures and other animals feasted on the body of Divyan.
Goddess who came to know about the tragic even soon appeared
on Eshan Para. She demanded Amrita kumbham from the Trimurti and they gave it
to her. She then brought Divyan back to life but his one eye was missing and
thus he came to be known as Konkannan Ayathar.
Several persons in the family of the landlord who ordered
the death of Divyan died due to small pox. Finally, it was found that the
family has the curse of Devi and it can be only alleviated by Divyan. Divyan went
to the house and sprinkled turmeric powder and this led to some relief.
But on the next Friday, Devi entered the body of the wife of
the landlord and demanded that she be given his house and they all should vacate
the land. The landlord invited famous Tantric Kattumadom Tantric to find a
solution. The tantric was able to capture Devi in a copper vessel. But she jumped
out and showed the form of ferocious Bhadrakali. Kattumadom fell on the feet of
the Devi and asked for forgiveness. He then gave her a space of worship in the
house and asked the landlord to vacate the place.
The temple performs special rituals on Fridays. The shrine performs Annadanam on all Fridays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

ദിവ്യനെ മർദിക്കുകയും ഈശാൻ പാറ എന്ന
സ്ഥലത്തു വെച്ച് കഴുവിലേറ്റുകയും ശരീര ഭാഗങ്ങൾ പലതും
പക്ഷി മൃഗാദികൾ കൊണ്ട് പോകുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ബിന്ദുക്കൾ ശിവന്റെ ദേഹത്ത് തളിക്കുന്ന നേരത്തു അംഗ ഭംഗം വന്ന
ശരീര ഭാഗങ്ങൾ പക്ഷി മൃഗാദികൾ തിരിച്ചെത്തിക്കുകയും തുടർന്ന് ജീവൻ വെക്കുകയും ഒരു
കണ്ണ് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ കോങ്കണ്ണൻ ആയത്താർ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് അരുളി ചെയ്തു.

ഭക്തനായ ദിവ്യനെ കഴുവിലേറ്റിയ കൈക്കോളറുടെ കുടുംബത്തെ മാരകമായ വസൂരി പിടിപെട്ടു 14 പേർ മരിക്കുമെന്ന് ശപിക്കുകയും
അത് മാറ്റാനുള്ള കഴിവ് ദിവ്യന് കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ദേവിയുടെ
പ്രവചനം അനുഭവത്തിൽ വരികയും പ്രശ്ന ചിന്തയിൽ കാര്യം ഗ്രഹിച്ച കൈക്കോളർ ദിവ്യനെ തേടി വരികയും മാപ്പിരക്കുകയും

ആയ താരില് ആവാഹിച്ച ഭഗവതിയെ ബാധ ആണെന്ന് കരുതി
ഒഴിപ്പിക്കാൻ കാട്ടു മഠം തന്ത്രിയെ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുകയും
തന്ത്രി ദേവിയെ ആവാഹിച്ചു ചെമ്പു കുടത്തിൽ അടക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
