Naga Theyyams – Snake Theyyam

 Theyyam is a famous ritual art form in North Kerala which brings to life the glories tradition and culture of the region. It encompasses dance, mime and music. It exalts the beliefs of the people of the region who gave a lot of importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of their ancestors. Naga theyyams (snake or serpent worship) are an important part of theyyam ritual.

Naga theyyams are part of Naga aradhana or worship on serpents seen through out Kerala and coastal Karnataka. Some of the famous Naga theyyams include Nagakanni, Nagarajan, Nagathan, Nagapothi, Nagakali and Nageshwari Devi.

Naga theyyams are performed mainly kavu (sacred groves) which have a specific area designated for snakes known as Sarpa Kavukal.

Naga theyyams can be witnessed at many tharavadu which has a tradition of Naga worship and in Naga Kavuval or serpent groves like Kayyath Nagam, Muyathu Nagam, Erumbala Nagam, Karippal Nagam and Edattu Nagam.

As per local story, the Naga theyyams arrive to bless and take offerings from their abode in Milky Ocean (palkadal). It is said that there is a silver rock in the middle of the sea filled with milk. Near the rock there is a Maninaga Mani Pavizham – a beautiful pearl beyond description. Near this beautiful pearl is the abode of the serpents known as Maninagaputtu.

Members of Vannan community, Panan community and Munnuttan community usually appears as Naga theyyams.

When the theyyam is performed a special ritual known as Sarpabali is also performed.

Naga theyyams are worshipped to overcome skin related problems, to beget children, to overcome pregnancy related problems and to avoid confrontation with poisonous reptiles and snakes. Special pujas and worshiped are offered to the deity to overcome Naga dosham and to overcome horoscope related problems due to the bad positioning of Rahu and Ketu.

The attire and headdress of the Naga theyyams have motifs and symbols of snakes.

നാഗാരാധനയുടെ ഭാഗമായുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്നാഗകന്നി, നാഗരാജന്‍, നാഗത്താന്‍, നാഗപ്പോതി മുതലായവ. മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ കാവുകളിലും സര്പ്പരക്കാവുകള്‍ ഉള്ളതായി കാണാന്‍ കഴിയും. കയ്യത്ത് നാഗം, മുയ്യത്ത് നാഗം, ഏറുമ്പാല നാഗം, കരിപ്പാല്‍ നാഗം, എടാട്ട് നാഗം എന്നീ പ്രസിദ്ധങ്ങളായ നാഗ സങ്കേതങ്ങളിലും ചില ഗൃഹങ്ങളിലുമാണ് നാഗ ദേവതകളെ കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്നത്. പാല്ക്കടലിന്റെ നടുവിലുള്ള വെള്ളിമാന്‍ കല്ലിന്റെ അരികിലുള്ള മണിനാഗ മണിപ്പവിഴത്തിന്റെ സമീപത്തെ മണിനാഗപ്പുറ്റില്‍ നിന്നാണത്രെ ദേവതമാര്‍ ഉണ്ടായത്.

നാഗകണ്ടനെയും നാഗ കന്നിയെയും കെട്ടുന്നത് വണ്ണാന്മാ്രാണെങ്കില്‍ പാണന്മാറരും മുന്നൂറ്റാന്മാ്രും കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന നാഗ ദേവതകളാണ് നാഗക്കാളിയും നാഗഭഗവതിയും. ഇത് കൂടാതെ രാമവില്യം കഴകത്തില്‍നാഗത്തിന്‍ ദൈവംഎന്നൊരു നാഗ ദേവതയെ വണ്ണാന്മാാര്‍ കെട്ടിവരുന്നു. കുറുന്തിനി പാട്ടിനു കെട്ടിയാടാറുള്ള കുറുന്തിരി ഭഗവതിയും കുറുന്തിനിക്കാമനും (നാഗക്കാമന്‍) നാഗ ദേവതകളാണ്. തെയ്യം നടക്കുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ സര്പ്പതബലിയും നടക്കും. സന്താന വരദായിനിയും രോഗ വിനാശിനിയുമാണത്രേ നാഗ ദേവതകള്‍.

തെയ്യങ്ങളുടെ ചമയങ്ങളില്‍ നാഗരൂപങ്ങള്ക്ക് നല്ല പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ട്. നാഗപ്പോതിയുടെ മുടിക്ക് തന്നെ പേര് നാഗമുടി എന്നാണു. മറ്റ് തെയ്യങ്ങളുടെ പല ആഭരണങ്ങളിലും നാഗ രൂപാലങ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ കാണാം. കുരുത്തോടികളിലും മുഖപ്പാളികളിലും നാഗങ്ങളെ വരച്ചു വയ്ക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്. നാഗം താത്തെഴുത്ത് എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഒരു മുഖത്തെഴുത്ത് തന്നെയുണ്ടത്രേ.
