Malankurathi Theyyam – Story – Information

Malankurathi theyyam (Malamkurathi or Malakurathi or Mala Kurathi) is a very popular theyyam and is worshipped at numerous kavu, tharavadu and temples in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of North Kerala during the annual theyyam, thira and kaliyattam festival. As per information, she spreads various kinds of poxes in the region. As per Malankurathi theyyam story, she is none other than Goddess Parvati and is referred to as Kunnin Makal – the daughter of Mountain. She protects her devotees from supernatural forces and all kinds of natural calamities. She prefers to stay in outdoor store area of the house.

If there is a Malankurathi theyyam in a sacred place, she will be the first theyyam to appear. She is widely worshipped by the women folk. The scene of women cooking food and serving it to Malankurathi theyyam is a heart wrenching scene. All kinds of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes are part of the food served.

She is worshipped to keep away all kinds of health problems. She is also invoked for good health of children.

Malankurathi theyyam is worshipped at Kuthuparamba Kottayam Mathukkavu Pottan Thira (March 25 to March 26) and Nileshwaram Thattacheri Adukkathayarillam.
