Temple Significance

  • This is the 90th Shiva Sthalam (Temple) on the Southern Bank of the River Cauvery to be glorified in the Thevaram hymns.
  • It is the 153rd Thevara Sthalam among the 274 Shiva Temples praised in the Thevaram.

At Thiruvarur Pathanjali Manoharar temple, Lord Shiva displayed his sacred foot (Thiruppaadham) and performed his Ajapa Natanam dance here.

  • The principal deity (Shiva) here is a Suyambu Moorthy (self-manifested idol) made of sand (Mannāl ānā).
  • On either side of the Gopuram entrance are shrines for Vinayagar (Ganesha) and Murugan.
  • Inside are the Nandi (bull), Balipeetam (sacrificial altar).
  • The outer circumambulatory path (Prākaram) is maintained as a Nandhavanam (flower garden).
  • Shrines in the Prākaram include Saneeswaran (Saturn), Chandra (Moon), Sūriyan (Sun), Vinayagar, and Gajalakshmi.
  • In the front hall (Mun Mandapam) there is an idol of Patanjali, and in the main hall (Maha Mandapam) an idol of Vyāghrapādar.
  • The surrounding niches (Koshtam) house deities like Dakshinamoorthy, Vishnu, Brahma, and Durga.
