Thayineri Sree Kurinji Temple - History - Theyyam Festival

Thayineri Sree Kurinji temple is located near Payyanur, Kannur district, Kerala. Thayineri Sree Kurinji Temple Theyyam festival attracts scores of devotees. The annual festival in the temple is observed from Makaram 27 to 29 (February 10 to February 13).


The pyre (Thee kundam) called Meleri which is lit inside the walls of the temple during the 3-day Theyyam adds to the uniqueness of the festival.

The main theyyams performed in the temple are Kundor Chamundi, Kurathi theyyam, Puliyoor Kali theyyam, Poomaruthan, Madayil Chamundi, Raktha Chamundi, Vishnumoorthy theyyam, Ottakolam and Puthiya Bhagavathi.

 The main deity worshipped in the temple is Poomala Bhagavathi.

Legend has it that the family-head of Punnakkan joint family brought a Kurinji sapling imbued with the divine spirit and implanted it at the spot which later became the temple. The single Kurinji sapling spread around the area making it soon a grove of Kurinji.
