Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple – A Legacy of Devotion and Divine Grace
An Ancient Shiva Temple Founded by Sage Kavera, Revered for Powerful Abhishekas and Spiritual Remedies
Historical Significance
The temple dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries, making it approximately 700 years old. According to local tradition, the great sage Maharshi Kavera stayed in this village during a pilgrimage. During his stay, he is believed to have worshipped Lord Parameshwara (a form of Lord Shiva). It is said that he installed a Shiva Linga (an abstract representation of Shiva) and established the temple at that time.
The presiding deity—the original idol—is believed to have been consecrated by Sage Kavera himself. This sacred act enhances the temple’s spiritual and historical importance. The tradition holds that while on pilgrimage, the sage resided in the village of Kavoor, performed the Shiva Linga pratishtha (installation), and engaged in regular worship.
Spiritual Belief and Healing Powers
Devotees visiting the temple for darshan (spiritual viewing) often believe their heartfelt desires are fulfilled by the grace of Sri Mahalingeshwara. Many report relief from various astrological and karmic afflictions, including:
-
Jataka dosha (birth-chart related problems),
-
Vak dosha (curses or problems due to negative speech),
-
Mrityu kantaka (threats of untimely death),
-
and Graha dosha (planetary disturbances or obstacles).
The Temple of Abhisheka: Ritual Worship of Lord Shiva
This temple is renowned as an "Abhisheka-priya" shrine—meaning Lord Shiva here is believed to be especially pleased with ritualistic bathing ceremonies. The temple has gained popularity for the performance of various types of Rudrabhisheka, a potent Vedic ritual involving the chanting of the Rudram while bathing the Linga with sacred offerings.
Special Poojas at the Temple include:
-
Panchamrita Rudrabhisheka – using milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar
-
Ekadasha-vฤra Rudrabhisheka – with 11 recitations
-
Shata Rudrabhisheka – with 100 recitations
-
Ranga Pooje – a vibrant offering ritual with elaborate decorations
Location and Renovation
The temple is located at the center of the village, near the expansive Kavoor lake, which adds a serene and sacred atmosphere to the surroundings.
In 1982 CE, the temple underwent major renovation (jeernoddhara), spearheaded by the devoted efforts of villagers from Kavoor and Paravoor. At the time, the temple was in a deteriorated condition, and the renovation was undertaken to preserve it and improve accessibility for devotees.
Festivals and Special Observances
During the month of Karthika (usually November), the temple hosts elaborate rituals including:
-
Rudrabhisheka
-
Deepaaradhane (lamp worship)
-
Ranga Pooje
On the occasion of Mahashivaratri, special Shiva pujas are conducted, and in Dhanurmasa (mid-Dec to mid-Jan), Dhanur Puja is performed.
These sacred services are believed to:
-
Fulfill devotees' wishes (ishtartha),
-
Alleviate graha dosha, vak dosha, and mrityu kantaka.
Unique Temple Traditions
One unique custom during Mahapooje (grand worship) at this temple is the pouring of water on the steps leading to the garbhagudi (sanctum sanctorum). This traditional practice symbolizes purification and reverence before entering the divine space.
