Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto the First Traditional Vedic Mandir in Canada

The magnificent and intricately carved BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto will open on Sunday 22 July 2007. The temple is built at a staggering cost of $40 million and is free of steel. Majority of the parts of the temple have been hand carved in India. The local Hindu community in Toronto offered the services of more than 300 volunteers and financed for the major part of the temple. The temple has no government funding and has been erected in record 18 months.

Interestingly, limestone was imported from Turkey to India and marble from Italy to India. The carved pieces were then imported from India to Canada.

wow, this is cool. Right up in my area. it's a shame that the government doesn't support hindu organizations financially too much when other religious institutions get millions of dollars. all of us should get support or none at all, at least that's how i feel..

all mandirs are ishwara's place only so to consider that one is the only one being traditional vedic is not correct

in swaminarayana temple where they allow all to come and see it is great but hindu traditions do not say to go to temples when one gets periods ladies so how can they say they are following vedic traditions

it is a sacred place like all other temples where ishwara resides that is the first and only truth they have to digest

Well, It's kind of Bias.. Why do they spend money for Hindu Temple. and apart from the Temple, according to me, its a business. If you r opening a business, you have to invest.

all that flying around of marble and stone, does anyone else think money could be better spent on their social ventures that help people? if this was the only swami narayan temple, i would be more understanding - however, this is one of many and after reading about the lavish amounts of money spent on temples, i am begining to think that for a devloping country like India - the money could be put to use in much better ways.

also, Hindu traditions say not to go during your period most likely because of the sanitary conditions at the time. There is the other thought that since temples are supposed to be a 'clean' place (ie u are supposed to go after having showered), and women are cleansing their body - they should not attend temple during htis process. However, i would like to see how many people who go to temple in India have actually showered right before going, maybe 50%.

Every temple divides the women's side and the men's side right in the middle. It is only at the Swaminarayan temples that women sit behind the men! Hinduism is about respect for women, half our gods are females. Why this gender discrimination?

In the London BAPS temple, when I first visited, Lord Ganesh was seated and Lord Hanuman held the hair of a demoness. Now, Lord Ganesh is standing and Lord Hanuman gives "ashirwad". Why have they changed the consecrated deities? Everything else may change in a temple except the gods. Has no-one noticed this? Why? What happened to original deities?

I noticed that too at the London BAPS! Anyone know why?
