Brahmacheri Bhagavathy or Brahmanjeri Bhagavathy Theyyam is yet another powerful Shaiva theyyam performed in many tharavadu, kavu and temples in Kasaragod and Kannur districts of Kerala. The story origin of Brahmanjeri Bhagavathy Theyyam is associated with Shiva. Legend has it that Brahmacheri Bhagavathy appeared from the third of Shiva to annihilate those performing adharma. Bappooran Theyyam, or Bappiriyan, is a Muslim theyyam performed in many temples, kavu and tharavadu in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The theyyam is associated with Aryakkarapoongani. The belief is that she was sailor of the boat in which Aryakkarapoongani traveled. Another legend has it that he was a famous merchant of the region and was killed while defending his ship in the sea. Legend has it that the boat in which Aryakkarapoongani was traveling capsized and her brothers in the boat took refuge in various islands. Aryakkarapoongani then happened to see Bappooran was traveling in his boat. But he ignored the calls for help. Aryakkarapoongani then shows her magical powers to get the attention of Bapporan. She then takes the help of Bappooran in uniting her brothers who were traveling with her. The brothers decide to stay at Venmalayatin Kara. Pishach Mochan Shradh is annually observed on the 14 th day during the waxing phase of moon (Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi) in Margashirsh month as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India . Pishach Mochan Shradh 2024 date is December 14. Special puja and rituals are held on the day for those who had premature death (due to accidents and other unnatural causes). Thousands of devotees visit the Pishach Mochan Kund in Varanasi for performing Shraddha Karma and Pind Daan on the day. Sankarshana is one of the names of Balarama. Balarama is an avatar of Vishnu for some communities in Hindu religion. Others believe that he is an avatar of Adi Sesha. But the story as to why Balaram is known as Sankarshana is the same in all scriptures. Six children of Devaki were mercilessly killed by Kamsa as a voice from sky had stated that Kamsa will be killed by the eighth child of Devaki and Vasudeva. She conceived the seventh child in the prison of Kamsa. In the seventh month of her pregnancy the fetus was transferred, with the blessing of Bhagvan Vishnu, to the womb of Rohini, first wife of Vasudeva who lived in Gokul. The child was born in due time at Gokula. As the fetus was transferred from one womb to another the child born was also known as Sankarshana. Sankarsha means to transfer.

Kattampally Sree Puthiyavalappil Kavu Temple – Theyyam Thira Festival

Kattampally Sree Puthiyavalappil Kavu temple is located at Kattampally in Kannur district, Kerala. The annual theyyam thira festival in the temple is observed for three days in Malayalam Makara Masam – Makaram 1, Makaram 2 and Makaram 3 (January 15, January 16 and January 17). The shrine is dedicated to deities popularly worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in Kannur district. The temple has a chathura sreekovil for the main deities – two deities are worshipped in a single sanctum sanctorum with two doors. Various other deities popularly worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in Kannur district are worshipped in small sreekovils or sanctum sanctorum and square platforms. The main theyyams performed during the annual Kaliyattam and thira festival at Kattampally Sree Puthiya Valappil Kavu temple are Kandanar Kelan theyyam, Kudiveeran theyyam, Elladath bhagavathy theyyam, Vayanattu Kulavan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Puliyoor Kannan theyyam and Sasthappan – Kuttichathan theyyam.

The main theyyams performed at Kannothu Kalluparambil Thai Paradevatha temple during the annual Kaliyattam and thira festival are Thai Paradevatha theyyam, Kurathi theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Pottan theyyam, Vishnumoorthi theyyam and Sasthappan – Kuttichathan theyyam.
