Svapushpa – Sulphur In Hindu Scriptures – Symbolism

Sulphur is referred to as Svapushpa in Hindu scriptures. In Hindu alchemy symbolism, mercury is regarded as semen of Shiva, the potent masculine energy, and complementary to it is svapushpa or sulphur, as the feminine principle. The union of these two is a figurative way, represents the sublime Shiva – Shakti. In chemical terms, it would mean mercuric sulphide or rasalingam, which is supposed to have powers of conferring immortality on the physical body, if consumed by one according to certain dietary regimen and certain yogic practices. Mercuric sulphide in its naturally occurring form is known as cinnabar, which was regarded as the alchemical supremo by the Chinese – a seed-idea which stimulated Indian alchemical endeavours. In the tantric text, Matrkabhedatantram, Shiva tells his consort, Devi, that mercury is his seed (beeja), sulphur, her own creative principle (svapushpa) and that the rasalingam is to be prepared with these two and shaped into a phallic linga form. Is Number 741 Inauspicious In Hindu Religion?

Is Number 741 Inauspicious In Hindu Religion? Yes for certain Hindu communities in Rajasthan and for Hindu businessman from the region. No one should ever open a letter, the envelope of which bears the figure 741. Only the addressee is allowed the open the letter with the number 741. This taboo has been prevalent among Hindu businessmen, especially in Rajasthan. It relates to the fall of Chittorgarh in 1576 CE when Rana Pratap was its ruler. It is said that Akbar estimated the number of Rajput soldiers who had died by collecting and weighing the sacred threads on their bodies. The collective weight was 741 pounds. Vincent A. Smith, the English biographerof Akbar, observes in this context that, since the fall of Chittor, the number 741 has been held to be accursed.

Mohana Name of Vishnu – Sri Krishna

Mohna is an epithet of Vishnu or Sri Krishna. The name ‘Mohana’ as an epithet of Vishnu (Sri Krishna) does not appear in the original list of one thousand epithets of Vishnu in the Mahabharata. The term as one of the thousand epithets of Vishnu occurs in Skanda Purana. The term is used as an epithet of Shiva in Skanda Purana and also as an epithet of kama in Brahmanda Purana. This term also means “one of the seventy hosts in the eastern direction of Hara Narayana”; these are Shaiva hosts and fifty Vaishnava hosts. The term mohana means “mythical weapon of pisacas” and “one of the five arrows of Kama” (Narayaneeyam). Krishna and Krishna lila seem to be one. Due to Krishna lila is often called Mohana, meaning “bewildering, perplexing, stupefying, infatuating, fascinating.” In Hindu writings of Sri Krishna, one hears many names of Krishna more frequently than the name of Krishna itself, because Hindu devotional writers take delight in playing with words. Lika Kama and Shiva, Sri Krishna

Sule Sankavva – Medieval Kannada Poetess

The medieval poets were critical of age-old traditions, superstitions, castes and class discriminations. The Virashaiva movement and the vacana literature paved the way for all liberal thinking people to come together. Even cobblers, oil-millers, spinners, washer man, ferryman, burglars and prostitutes transformed their lives by joining the liberal Virashaiva movement, which carried the universal message of fraternity and peaceful co-existence. Among Thousands Of People Scarcely One Strives For Perfection

It is a great thing even to strive after God-vision. Our very attempt is the result of good karma acquired in a past life. Sri Krishna calls those who seek for freedom siddhas, which literally means the perfected ones. It is a ‘great attainment even to long after God.’ It means that we have entered the race. But what do we find? ‘Among thousands of persons, scarcely one strives for perfection,’ says Sri Krishna. Who cares for Truth? We are more like animals. We live in the senses. We do not care for religion. We want health and prosperity and good times. But we do not care for God. Yes, compared with the ordinary man, those few who sincerely seek after Truth are perfect. They have abandoned their evil ways and entered the race and they must reach the goal sooner or later. It is a great thing to have made a beginning, to have turned our face towards that supreme Goal, which is Knowledge and the realization of God in all His fullness. Indeed, having attained that, nothing else remains
