Sree Chirakka Kavu Bhagavathy temple is located at Koduvally near Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi and numerous other deities. The annual kaliyattam theyyam thira festival is held for three days in Malayalam Meda Masam – Medam 10 to Medam 12 (April 23 to April 25).
The primary deity of this temple is Goddess Kali, venerated
in three forms known as Thri-Gunath- Ambika. The construction of the temple was
initiated by King Chirakkkal Raja of Kolathiri after the spontaneous
manifestation of the goddess on the banks of the Koduvally River. Consequently,
the temple gained prominence and came to be recognized as Sree Chirakkakavu.
Legend has it that Goddess Kali revealed herself in the azhimugham (estuary) of Vamal, along with her entourage, in the palace situated at the confluence of the river and the sea. She assumed the divine form of a fish, and the present-day location is referred to as Vamal, marking the sacred Moolasthana of Sree Chirakkakavu Bhagavathi.
Upon visiting the palace, Chirakkal Raja paid homage to the
goddess, and subsequently, he erected the temple atop Illikkunnu, believed to
be an ancient hermitage. The temple is enveloped by kavu, or clusters of sacred
groves.
The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kotheri
Asharikkandi Bhagavathy temple include Chorakkalathil Bhagavathi, Guntur Kotta Vanabhan
Thira, Thee Thira, Cheriya Bhagavathi theyyam, Ilagaruvan Poothadi, Valiya Thamburatty
and Cheriya Thamburatti.
The temple has a small chathura sreekovil for the main
deity. The roof of the small shrine is decorated with traditional temple
motifs. There are other smaller sreekovils. Some deities are offered worship
under trees and upon raised platforms.
The temple observes the annual pratishta day on Avittam nakshatra
in Dhanu Masam. Chuttuvilakku is performed on Dhanu Masam 10 (December 26 or
December 27).

- അവിടെന്ന് മക്കളിലോരുവൾ തെരൺഠീ രൂപമെടുത്ത് അതിൽ മുകളി കയറി കോടവളളിയാൽ ചുറ്റപെട്ട സ്ഥലത്ത് എത്തുകയും ഒരുനായർ സ്ത്രീ യുടെരൂപത്തിൽ അവിടെ ഇരുന്ന് കൺട ഏറ്റുകാരനോട് ദാഹജലത്തിന് ചോദിച്ച ദേവിയോട് ഇന്ന് ഏറ്റിയകളള് മാത്രം കൈവശം ഉളളതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.
- ഞാൻചിന്തിച്ചത് നീമനസിൽകൺടതെന്ന് പറയുകയും കടവ്കടന്ന് ഒരു കല്ലിലിരുന്നു (ഇന്നത്ത വാമൽക്ഷേത്രം) ദേവികളളുവാങ്ങികുടിച്ച് തന്റെ ശൂലം എറിഞൂ..വീണിഠം എനിക്ക് ഇരിപ്പിഠം വേണമെന്ന് പറന്ങ് അപ്രതൃക്ഷമായി.
- കാരൃമറിഞ ചിറക്കൽ തബുരാൻ രാശിയിൽ ഗണിച്ച് ഇന്നത്തെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ചിറക്കാകാവ് നിർമിച്ചതത്രേ.
- തിരൺഠീ രൂപംപൂൺഠ മകൾ അമ്മഇരുന്ന (വാമൽ) കല്ലിനരികിലെ അഴിമുഖത്ത് അമരുകയും അവിടെ അഗാതമായ ഒരു കുഴി ഉൺടാവുകയുംചെയ്തു അവിടെ ഇപ്പോഴും തിരൺഠി കുളം എന്ന് പറയപെടുന്നൂ.
- ഈ തിരൺഠിയെ ഒരമുക്കുവന് കിട്ടുകയും അസാമാനൃ വലിപ്പം കൺടമുക്കുവൻ അതിനെ ചിറക്കൽ തബുരാന് കാഴ്ചവച്ചു അതിനെ മുക്കുവനോട് സന്നിധിയിൽ വച്ച് മുറിക്കാൻ ആവശൃപെട്ടൂ. മുറിഞ് വീണകഷ്ണങൾ മുഴുവൻ രക്തങൾ ആയി പതച്ച് പൊങി അത് ഒരു ഭഗവതി രൂപമായിപരിണമിച്ചൂ അത്രേ.
