Vadakkathi Bhagavathy Theyyam kolam is a unique and interesting theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in numerous tharavadu, kavu, sacred places and temples in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala. As per information, this is a rare half-man-half-woman theyyam and a marakkala theyyam (the Devi arrived on a boat). As per Vadakkathy Bhagavathi Theyyam story, she is the daughter of Shiva. She was asked by her father to help Parashurama in defeating the kshatriyas who were propagating adharma on earth. It is said that when she arrived on earth she did not know to go in which direction. She finally decided to go in the north direction and therefore she was called Vadakkathi Bhagavathi (Vadakku meaning north).
As per another story, there was a palm tree in the middle of the sea near Velliman rock. There were seven golden eggs on top the palm tree. Six eggs broke open and six mountains were formed and from it appeared six male warriors. The seventh egg broke open and from it appeared a beautiful young goddess. When the goddess reached the age of 12 the six brothers arrived to conduct her coming of age ceremony. They went hunting and got several deer for the ceremony. But while returning back the brothers were stopped by Machinayanmar who claimed that they should be given the heads and legs of the deer as it was hunted from their land. When the brothers were not ready to part with their kill, they were killed by Machinayanmar.
The sister who came to know about the incident performed
intense tapas and gained immense strength. She then killed the clan of
Machinayanmar. She roamed around defeating anyone who challenged her. She defeated
the elephant of Indra, Airavata. She then came to Malanadu and defeated
numerous local rulers and chieftains. Finally, she decided to visit Kolathunadu.
For this purpose, she asked Vishwakarma to build a boat. She travelled on the boat
and visited several lands and finally on the request of Vishwakarma she made
Edathoor her abode.
The theyyam has a huge thirumudi. She wears a beard to
indicate her half man half woman status. She got the beard after defeating a
Tulu chieftain.
അര്‍ദ്ധ പുരുഷ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ള ശിവ പുത്രിയായ ഈ ദേവി മരക്കല ദേവതയാണ്.
- ദുഷ്പ്രഭുക്കളായ അസുരന്‍മാരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കാന്‍ പുറപ്പെട്ട തന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്‍ കൂടിയായ പരശുരാമനെ സഹായിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി പരമേശ്വരന്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതാണ് ഈ ദേവതയെ എന്നാണു ഐതിഹ്യം.
- അസുരനെ വധിക്കാനായി പരശുരാമനോടൊപ്പം പടക്കെത്തിയ ഭഗവതിയായത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ‘പടക്കത്തി ഭഗവതി’ എന്ന പേര് വന്നത്.
- ദേവിയുടെ ശരിയായ നാമധേയം ‘വടക്കത്തി ഭഗവതി’യാണെന്നും ഭൂമിയിലെത്തിയ ദേവി എങ്ങോട്ട് പോകണമെന്നറിയാതെ വിഷമിച്ചു എന്നും അവസാനം വടക്ക് ഭാഗത്തേക്ക് പോകാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു എന്നും അങ്ങിനെയാണ് ഈ പേര് വന്നതെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ശിവപുത്രിയെന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ദേവിയുടെ സൃഷ്ടിയെക്കുറിച്ച് മറ്റൊരു കഥ കൂടിയുണ്ട്.
- പാല്‍ക്കടലില്‍ വെള്ളിമാന്‍ കല്ലിനരികത്ത് എഴു മടലുകളും എട്ട് തിരുളുകളുമുള്ള ഒരു കരിമ്പന ഉണ്ടെന്നും അതിന്റെ എട്ടാം തിരുളിന്റെ മുകളില്‍ ഏഴു പൊന്മുട്ടകള്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്നും അതില്‍ ആറു മുട്ടയുടഞ്ഞു ആറു മലകളായി പോയി ചെന്ന് വീണു എന്നും അതില്‍ നിന് ആറു പേര് ഉണ്ടാകുകയും ഏഴാം മുട്ടയുടഞ്ഞ് ഒരു ദേവ കന്യക ഉണ്ടായി എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
- പന്ത്രണ്ടാം വയസ്സില്‍ കന്യക ഋതുമതിയായപ്പോള്‍ തിരണ്ടു കല്യാണം ആഘോഷമാക്കാന്‍ ആറു ആങ്ങിളമാരും വന്നു ചേര്‍ന്നു.
- തിരണ്ടു കല്യാണത്തിനു വേണ്ട ഇറച്ചിക്ക് വേണ്ടി ആറു പേരും നായാട്ടിനു കരിയൂര്‍ കല്‍വളവില്‍ മാനെയ്യാന്‍ പോയി. എന്നാല്‍ നായാട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങി വരുന്ന അവരെ മച്ചിനിയന്‍മാര്‍ മലയവകാശം പറഞ്ഞു വഴി തടയുകയും മാന്‍ തലയും കാലും തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വേണമെന്ന് ശഠിക്കുകയും ആ വാക്കേറ്റം യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ കലാശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതിന്റെ ഫലമായി മച്ചിനിയന്‍മാര്‍ അവരെ ആറു പേരെയും യമപുരിക്കയക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
- ഇതറിഞ്ഞ ദേവി തപസ്സു ചെയ്തു ശക്തി നേടി മച്ചിനിയന്‍മാരെ വധിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് പല നാടുകളില്‍ പോയി പലരോടും യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തു പതിനെട്ടു ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ സമ്പാദിച്ചു.
- ദേവേന്ദ്രന്റെ ആനയായ ഐരാവതത്തെ തോല്പ്പിച്ച് തുമ്പിക്കൈ കൈകൊണ്ടു.
- തുളു നാട്ടില്‍ ചെന്ന് ചേകവരെ തോല്പ്പിച്ച് തുളു താടിയും മീശയും കൈക്കൊണ്ടു.
- നെല്ലു കുത്തുന്ന പങ്ങാട്ടിയോടു പൊരുതി ഉലക്കയും മുറവും കൈക്കൊണ്ടു. ദേവേന്ദ്ര തണ്ടാത്തിയുടെ ചാണക്കലവും മാച്ചിയും പിടിച്ചു വാങ്ങി.
- തീയ്യനെ തോല്പ്പിച്ച് തളപ്പും ഏറ്റുകത്തിയും കൈകൊണ്ടു.
- എല്ലാ നാടുകളും ചുറ്റി കണ്ട ദേവി അവസാനം കോലത്ത് നാട് കാണാന്‍ ആഗ്രം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുകയും വിശ്വകര്‍മ്മാവിനെ വരുത്തി മരക്കലം പണിത് അതിലേറി കോലത്ത് നാട് മുഴുവന്‍ കണ്ട ശേഷം ഇടത്തൂര്‍ എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ വിശ്വകര്‍മ്മാവിന്റെ അപേക്ഷ പ്രകാരം അവിടെ കുടിയിരുന്നു എന്നാണു ഐതിഹ്യം.
