Murchana Music In Ramayana

Murchana is mentioned in the Ramayana with reference to vocal music and string instruments. Murchana is one of the most important technical terms of ancient Hindustani music. ‘Murchana’ is a systematic ascent and descent of notes and also the beautiful phrases that are produced in this process. Scholars regard Murchana as the foundation of Hindustani music as it has paved the way for the development of Jati and Raga. Lava and Kusha are ‘Murchanakovidau’, i.e. they know ‘Murchana’. They play the Veena and sing the verses of the Ramayana highlighting beautiful nuances of Murchana in their music. Valmiki initiates them to sing to the accompaniment of the Veena in Bhagavan Sri Rama’s presence at this Ashwamedha sacrifice asking them specifically to play the various ‘murchana’ through its strings. It is evident that Valmiki has painstakingly groomed Lava and Kusha in the art and technique of music. In addition to having a sound theoretical knowledge, Lava and Kusha seem to be equally

Parts Of Flag Pole Or Kodimaram In Kerala Temple

A flag pole or kodimaram in a Kerala temple is built strictly according to the architectural norms for temple structures. Here is a look at the different parts of the kodimaram. The length of the pole is usually eleven times the length of the door of the sanctum sanctorum or sreekovil. One part of the pole is under the ground and the other ten parts stand perpendicular to the ground. The flagpole is likened to the backbone of the deity. The Paras (drum shaped copper structures that cover the pole), the belts holding them, the Padma Peedam (a seat with the shape of a lotus) and the murti of Garuda, the vehicle of Mahavishnu on the top makes it a perfect flag post. Depending on the deity worshipped in the temple the vehicle and the peedam will change. On the ground, the base consists of different parts like Padukam, Jagathy, Kumudam, Kumudappadi, Galam, Utharam, Valaru, Kapotham, Vedika and Padmam. The flag is made up of the Pancha Varga, the five elements of nature, with the A

Aham Brahmasmi Explained By Swami Vivekananda

The Mahavakya, Aham Brahmasmi, is found in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. The context is the seeking of Brahman by some aspirants who are disgusted with the transitory world and were longing to attain the highest good. They deliberated – since men think that by the knowledge of Brahman, they become all, what, pray, was it that Brahman knew by which It became all? A disciple asked a question to Swami Vivekananda – If the One Brahman is the only Reality, why then exists all this differentiation in the world? To this Swami Vivekananda answered – are you not considering this question from the point of view of phenomenal existence? Looking from the phenomenal side of existence, one can, through reasoning and discrimination, gradually arrive at the very root of Unity. This root of unity is our own Self. Swami Vivekananda says in unambiguous terms – what does the Advaitist preach? He dethrones all the gods that ever existed, or ever will exist in the universe and places on that throne the
