Varahi and the Fish: Symbol of Life, Renewal and Cosmic Balance

The Matsya Varahi: Reading the Symbolism of Fish in Her Hands

Goddess Varahi, one of the Sapta Matrikas and the shakti of Varaha avatar of Bhagavan Vishnu, is depicted in several forms across Tantric and Shakta traditions. In her Matsya Varahi form, she holds a fish in one hand and a Kapala (skull-cup) in the other. Together these two objects create a profound statement on the cycle of existence — the fish representing life, abundance and movement, and the Kapala representing death, dissolution and renewal. In Hindu thought, death is never seen as an end but as a necessary passage that allows nature to regenerate and flow with fresh vigor.

Associated with the element of Air and the sacred vibration of Pranava (Om), this manifestation of Goddess Varahi represents the unseen currents of life, wisdom, and cosmic consciousness. Her connection with Saturn reflects the transformative power of discipline, justice, perseverance, and the purification of the soul through karmic evolution.

Fish as a Spiritual Symbol

The fish holds a special place in Hindu symbolism. Matsya itself is counted among the Dashavatara of Vishnu, associated with preservation of life during the great deluge. Fish live within vast waters yet return to specific places for breeding and feeding, making them natural symbols of guidance between the known and the unknown, the visible and the invisible. They are seen as beings that move fearlessly through water, representing the soul's ability to cross the ocean of samsara without being consumed by it. This fearless movement is linked to liberation, joy and spontaneous freedom of spirit.

Abundance, Fertility and Adaptability

In ancient agrarian and riverine societies, fish were a primary source of food, and their abundance signalled prosperity. Varahi holding a fish reflects the bounty of nature and her role as a provider. Owing to their prolific breeding, fish also became symbols of fertility, life and new beginnings. Their constant motion with the current represents adaptability, flexibility and resilience — qualities essential for survival and spiritual growth alike.

Ecological Wisdom of Varahi

Varahi is deeply rooted to the earth, just as the wild boar tills and turns the soil, sustaining forest ecology. By holding the fish, she symbolically links forest and river — when rivers thrive, fish multiply, and when fish multiply, the entire ecosystem finds balance. This interconnectedness of land, water and life is a wisdom humans often overlook.

Modern Day Relevance

In today's world of ecological imbalance, the imagery of Varahi holding fish serves as a reminder that human prosperity is tied to the health of rivers, forests and natural cycles. Her form teaches that abundance and renewal go hand in hand, and that respecting nature's balance is essential for collective wellbeing.
