Martand Saptami

Martand Saptami is dedicated to Hindu God Surya – the sun god. The rituals associated with Surya are observed on the saptami or seventh day during a lunar fortnight. Martand Saptami 2011 date is January 11. It must be noted that Saptami associated with Surya are observed in different months in different regions. Martand Saptami is observed on the seventh day of waxing phase of moon or Shukla Paksha in Paush month in calendars followed in North India – i n places like Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh. It is widely believed that Surya is the Pratyaksha Brahman. Prayers are offered for prosperity and good agricultural produce.
