The Boatman Who Knew No Philosophy but Knew How to Live There is a well loved story from the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna about a highly learned pundit crossing a river in a small boat. Proud of his vast learning, he spent the journey questioning the humble boatman who was rowing them across. Had he studied Sankhya, the ancient system that explains the nature of matter and consciousness? The boatman admitted he had not. The pundit shook his head and declared that a quarter of his life had been wasted. Did he know Yoga, the discipline of uniting the mind with the higher Self?
