Meaning And Reason For The Name Parikshit in Mahabharata
Parikshit was the son of Abhimanyu and Uttara. Abhimanyu was
the brave son of Arjuna and Subhadra, and he died in the Kurukshetra war.
Parikshit was born after his father’s death, when the Kuru lineage was almost
finished. In the Mahabharata, he is seen as the one who carried forward the
family of the Pandavas when very few were left.
Meaning of the Name
The name Parikshit comes from the word Parikshina, which
means to become weak, thin, lean or emaciated. This name was given because the
Kuru lineage had become very weak after the great war. Almost all the elders,
warriors and heirs on both sides were dead. So the name reminds us of the
condition of the family at the time of his birth. But the name also carries
another idea. The family was thin and weak, yet it did not end, and this child
became the reason for its recovery.
Birth in a Difficult Time
Parikshit was in the womb of Uttara when the war ended.
According to the Mahabharata, Ashwatthama released the Brahmastra to destroy
the Pandava line, and it was aimed at the unborn child. Bhagavan Krishna
protected the child in the womb and saved him. This is why Parikshit is also
known as Vishnurata, the one protected by Vishnu. His birth shows that when
Dharma is followed, divine protection is there even in the worst situations.
His Rule and Character
Parikshit followed Dharma and ruled with justice for all
people. He was learned and had conquered the six vices, which are desire,
anger, greed, attachment, pride and jealousy. He ruled for 60 years and brought
back the glory of the Kuru lineage. The kingdom became stable and the people
lived in peace. Yudhishthira and his brothers handed over the kingdom to him
before they left on their final journey, which shows the trust they had in him.
Symbolism and Meaning
The story of Parikshit has a deep meaning. A weak and thin
lineage became strong again through one child who followed Dharma. This shows
that the strength of a family or nation does not depend only on numbers or
power. It depends on right values and good leadership. His life also shows that
the end of a bad period can be the start of a new one.

protection supports those who stay on the right path.
- A name
does not decide a person’s future. Parikshit was named for weakness, but

Modern Day Relevance
Today many people face loss, failure or difficult times in family, career or health. The life of Parikshit teaches that such situations are not permanent. A person can rebuild with patience, discipline and honest effort. His story also reminds us to value the next generation, because the future of any family or society depends on how its young people are raised and guided.
Parikshit’s name speaks of weakness, but his life speaks of recovery and strength. Born when the Kuru lineage was nearly lost, he protected his people, followed Dharma and restored the glory of his family. The Mahabharata shows through him that hope never ends as long as Dharma is followed.
