Annapurna Yantra – Benefits – How To Worship

Annapurna Yantra – Significance, Benefits and Method of Worship

Annapurna Yantra is a sacred geometrical diagram dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, who is a form of Goddess Parvati. The name Annapurna means “one who is full of food” or “giver of food”. In Hindu belief, food is not just a physical need. It is a gift of the Divine, and Goddess Annapurna is the one who blesses every home with enough food and nourishment. This Yantra is worshipped by many families so that their kitchen and granary never become empty.

Significance of Annapurna Yantra

According to Hindu scriptures and traditions, once there was a time when Bhagavan Shiva said that the world is Maya and food is also an illusion. To teach him the value of food, Goddess Parvati disappeared from the world, and there was hunger everywhere. Then she appeared in Kashi as Annapurna and fed everyone. Even Bhagavan Shiva came with a begging bowl and received alms from her. This story is found in Puranic tradition and it shows that food is sacred and necessary for all beings, including the ascetics.

The Yantra is the energy form of this Goddess. In Yantra worship, the deity is not seen as a picture or statue, but as a pattern of divine energy. When the Yantra is established with proper mantras, it is believed that the presence of the Goddess stays in that place.

Uniqueness of the Yantra

Annapurna Yantra is special because it is connected directly with the basic need of a human being, that is food, and also with prosperity and contentment. Many other Yantras are worshipped for power or protection, but this one gives stability and satisfaction in daily life. It usually has a central bindu (dot), surrounded by triangles, an eight petal lotus, a sixteen petal lotus and the outer square gate called Bhupura. Each layer represents a different level of energy and protection around the Goddess in the centre.

Benefits of Worshipping Annapurna Yantra

Devotees believe that the worship of this Yantra gives the following benefits:

  • Regular availability of food and no shortage of grains in the house
  • Removal of poverty and financial troubles related to household needs
  • Peace and harmony among family members
  • Good health, as food is respected and not wasted
  • Blessings for hotels, restaurants, kitchens and those who work in food business
  • Reduction of obstacles in daily life and growth of prosperity
  • A feeling of gratitude and contentment in the mind

Ideal Material and Size

The Yantra can be made on copper, silver, gold or brass. Copper is the most common and affordable, and it is considered very good for holding spiritual energy. Silver is also liked for home worship. Gold is used by those who can afford it. A Yantra can also be drawn on bhojpatra (birch bark) or paper, but metal is better for long term worship.

For home, a size of 3 inches by 3 inches up to 6 inches by 6 inches is suitable. For a temple or commercial place, bigger sizes like 9 inches or 12 inches can be used. The Yantra should be engraved clearly and energised (pran pratishtha) by a knowledgeable priest before use.

Best Time and Place for Worship

Friday is considered very good for Goddess worship, and Monday and Thursday are also suitable. Special days are Annapurna Jayanti (which falls on Margashirsha Purnima), Navaratri, Akshaya Tritiya and Purnima days. Worship should be done in the early morning after bath, between sunrise and before noon.

The best place is the kitchen or the puja room. The Yantra should be kept facing east or north, on a clean red or yellow cloth. Place it in a place where it is not touched by unclean hands.

How to Worship Annapurna Yantra

  1. Take bath and wear clean clothes. Sit on a mat facing east or north.
  2. Clean the Yantra with water, and if possible with milk and then again with water.
  3. Place it on a plate or a small stand with a cloth below.
  4. Apply kumkum, turmeric and sandalwood paste on the Yantra.
  5. Offer red flowers, rice grains, fruits and sweets such as kheer or payasam.
  6. Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks.
  7. Chant the mantra with devotion. A popular mantra is: “Om Hreem Shreem Klim Namo Bhagavati Maheshwari Annapurne Svaha.” Another simple mantra is “Om Annapurnayai Namaha.”
  8. Chant the mantra 108 times using a rudraksha or tulsi mala. You can chant 11 or 21 times if you have less time.
  9. End with aarti and offer the prasad to family members. Some part of the food can be given to the poor or to cows.

Duration of Worship

Daily worship for 15 to 30 minutes is enough. For special purpose, devotees do the worship for 41 days continuously without a break. Many people also keep a vow of 11 Fridays. Regularity and sincerity are more important than long duration.

Important Points to Remember

Food should never be wasted in a house where Annapurna Yantra is kept. Keep the kitchen clean and do not use the Yantra place for storing unnecessary items. Before eating, offer a small part of the food to the Goddess with a prayer. This habit itself is considered a form of daily worship.

Annapurna Yantra is a simple but powerful way to invite the blessings of Goddess Annapurna in the home. With clean mind, proper method and devotion, it is believed to bring food security, prosperity and peace. More than material benefits, it also teaches us to respect food and share it with others, which is the real message of the Goddess.
