Vyana Vayu

Vyana vayu is one of the five vital airs flowing in the human body along specific channels called nadis. The concept of vayu is as old as the Vedas. We find a reference to vayus in Yajurveda (VII.27), where the names of five vayus are mentioned in a prayer. It is prayed that the inner energy be enhanced in the form of the five vital airs, one by one. In Chandogya Upanishad (I.3.3), the locations and functions of vayus are mentioned; it is said that the vyana vayu is present at the joint or meeting place of prana and apana, which are the two main vayus in the body. In Amritanada Upanishad (verse 35), vyana is said to be located in all the organs of the body. The ears, thighs and waist are mentioned as locations of this vital air in Trisikhibrahman Upanishad (mantra part, verse 82). In Vedantasara, the vyana vayu is said to be present everywhere in the body and moving in all directions. Similar references are found in many other traditional texts. Vyana vayu moves all over the body in c

Vyahriti – The Madhva View

The three mystic syllables bhuh, bhuvah, suvah elucidate the meaning of omkar. There is a fourth Vyahriti known as mahah and known to Chaturmukha Brahma. The monosyllable om is the nomenclature of Parabrahman. It is so concise that it is not easily cognizable. Hence bhuh, bhuvah, suvah – the three syllables which are calledthe vyahritis – explain om, and thereby Parabrahman, too. Rig Bhashya of Madhavacharya states that the vyahriti explains omkar. The three padas of Gayatri explain the vyahritis. The three padas of Gayatri explain the vyahritis. The three Riks of Purushasukta explain Gayatri. The three Vedas and all the Oriental literature explain Pusushasukta. Rig Bhashya explains the omkar and vyahritis as om that is complete with an infinite number of auspicious qualities and free from any blemishes, bhuh that is perfect in all aspects, bhuvah that is all-sided glory and suvah that is supersaturated with bliss. The four vyahritis are governed by four forms of Vishnu or Narayana

Nishedha In Hindu Philosophy

Nishedha or prohibition of wrong actions is an important aspect of Hindu philosophy. The Purva Mimamsa school of philosophy holds that performance of prohibited actions is papa (demerit). Mimamsa means inquiry, and the main objective of the system is to establish the authority of Veda, because Vedas teach dharma or religious duties. Dharma is what is enjoined in Vedas (codana-lakshano-rtah). Vedic commands are in the form of both do’s and don’ts. The positive command is called vidhi, and the negative command is nishedha (or pratisidha). Vidhis are the main source of dharma. The positive commands, such as obligatory duties (nityakarma) and occasional rites (naimittaka karmas), are categorical imperatives. The performance of nityakarmas and naimittikakarmas does not earn any merit, but their non-performance will result in demerit. One must avoid kamya-karma (self-centered action) and prohibited karma, such as killing. By avoiding forbidden (nishedha) courses of conduct we avoid re-bi

Vratya Stoma – A Purificatory Ritual

Vratya Stoma is a purificatory ritual during the Vedic age. According to Amarakosha, the word vratya means a twice-born, for whom the samskaras (purification rites), such as upanayana, have not been performed. So, a vratya is one who has lost his innate rights in his community by birth because of the absence of purification rituals that are mandatory. It is also possible that a twice born may become a vratya because of his bad conduct if he indulges in prohibited deeds such as adultery, murder, consumption of alcohol, etc. In order to regain one’s lost rights and to redeem oneself from the state of an outcaste, the Vratya Stoma rite has to be performed by the person concerned. This ritual has been formulated by Apastamba in his Srauta Sutra. He gives many options for the conduct of the same. It is a one-day Soma ritual, as we find from the details coded in these sutras. In Arsheyakalpa (Sama Veda), four types of Vratya Stoma are prescribed. In Asvalayana Srauta Sutra of the Rig Ved

Vratya – Supreme Being In Atharva Veda

The Vratya Kanda of Atharva Veda refers to the Supreme Being called Vratya, from whom Vratya Prajapati was born in the form of a golden egg. The word may be derived from vrata (vrat ‘to move’) occurring in Rig Veda (X.34.8, 12), Atharva veda II.9.1, Yajur Veda III.55, etc., having the sense of ‘multitude.’ Sayana takes the word vrata to mean ‘group’ or host (vratoh:sanghah). Mahindhara takes it to mean ‘one who conquers the groups of herotes (vrata surasamuhan sohate). In the Brahmana (XVII. 1-2) and some of Srauta Sutras refer to the vratyas as a group or class of people ousted from the Aryan society due to the breach of discipline. In the Aryan society, education was compulsory for all dvijas (twice born); those who failed to perform the upanayana (initiation ceremony to study) were declared to be patitasavitrika and they were subjected to social boycott.
