Andaka Kavi Viraraghava Mudaliar – Author Of Thirukalukundram Puranam

Andaka Kavi Viraraghava Mudaliar, also known as Veeraraghava Mudaliar or Viraraghavan, is a well known Tamil poet and author of Thirukalukundram Puranam. He was born in Pudur near Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Born blind, but with a great memory, he was educated in Kanchipuram and became well versed in Tamil. He became good at composing poetry and equally good at singing and playing the yaal (a stringed musical instrument). Unable to withstand the ill-treatment by his wife, Vira Raghava left home and lived in the land of Cholas for some time. Later he went to Illanadu (Sri Lanka), and was greatly appreciated there. Here he composed Kayattaru Arasan Ula, praising the Yalpanam king Pararajasinghan and received sumptuous gifts in return. Viraraghava Mudaliar was good at composing poetry in various meters such as pillai-tamil, kalambagam, kovai, and ula. He wrote ula poems. One was about the king of Yalpanam. The other one, on Lord Tyagaraja of Tiruvarur Temple, is called Tiruvarur Ula; i

Viparyaya

Viparyaya is one of the five constructs of the mind (vrittis). Patanjali has defined it as ‘false knowledge which is not in keeping with reality or what is (yogasutra: I.8). When a rope is mistaken for a snake or a shell for silver, the mistake is called viparyaya. It arises from imperfect perception, faulty inference, or false beliefs. One special feature of the falsity or error is that it passes for true knowledge until correct knowledge arises. In Yoga, this error is divided into five varieties. They are the impurities of the mind (chitta-malas) or the afflictions of the mind (kleshas). They are avidya (basic ignorance), asmita (ego feeling), raga (likes), dvesha (dislikes), abhinivesha (fear of death). They are beginningless, however, not endless. Patanjali has mentioned that they can be ended by the practice of kriya yoga (Yogasutra II 1-2) and dhyana (II.11). Error in the form of ignorance and afflictions is the root cause of misery. It is wholly ineffectual like friend seeds w

Vipralambha In Indian Classical Dance

Vipralambha is a feeling or sentiment of love in separation in Indian classical dance. It is one of the two main kinds of sringara (love). It happens because of longing, parting with the lover due to jealousy, journey or a curse. It stands in apposition to sambhoga (carnal or sexual union). Union in separation is the highest realization, so vipralambha is the highest kind of attainment. Without vipralambha, nothing can be attained. Krishna-vihara, Krishna-milana (meeting with Krishna) and vipralambha to Krishna consciousness. The safest and the most fearless position, however, is vipralambha. It is mentioned in Ujjvala-Nilamani that on the embankment of separation, the relishing of this mellow Viraha-rasa (flavor of separation) is of four types – purva raga, mana, prema-vaicchitya, and pravasa. Similarly four types of relishing are there on the embankment of union – sankshipta, samkirna, sampanya and samriddhimana. First, samkshipta is relished after the first type of viraha tattva,

Vikirti Concept In Hindu Religion

In Hindu religion, the concept of vikirti is the effect in philosophical parlance. Prakriti and vikriti are two technical terms in Samkhya philosophy. All objects in the universe (except the primordial nature, viz., mulaprakriti and the self) are looked upon as coming into existence by a way of change or modification (parinama). There is a infinite, unending process of parinama going on in the universe due to which one object gets modified into another. In this process the earlier object is called prakriti, the cause of the modified form, which in turn is called the vikriti (effect) of the earlier form. Thus cloth is a vikriti of threads (tantu), while tantu is the prakriti of cloth (pata). Fruit is the vikriti of flower, which is the prakriti of fruit. In this way there are said to be four main categories into which the twenty-five basic principles (tattvas) of Samkhya philosophy can be divided or grouped. This is mentioned in samkhyakarita (verse III). The four categories are as fo

Vikalpa In Hinduism

In Hinduism, Vikalpa is one of the five varieties of vrittis (fluctuations of the mind) recognized in Yoga. Patanjali (Yogasutra I.9) has defined it as ‘that which issues from knowledge of words and has no corresponding object.’ Vikalpa-vritti is different from both true and false knowledge, although it has some similarity to both. The phrase rajaputra (son of a monarch) is quite meaningful and would convey true knowledge in the presence of such a person. But the phrase vandhyaputra (son of a woman who is unable to bear children) which appears to be equally meaningful is not actually so, because we can find no such person in the world. The individual terms making this phrase are indeed quite meaningful separately, but when combined together, the whole phrase fails to indicate any object as an actual existent. Such a phrase is called a vikalpa. It means an imagination or fanciful notion. Other examples of vikalpa are – sasarhrnga (hare’s horn), hemadri (golden mountain0 and kshirasagara

Bhagavad Gita Chapter VIII – Verse 14

I am easily attainable by that even steadfast yogi who remembers Me daily and constantly, with a single mind, O son of Pritha. (Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8,14) He who thinks of Me, the supreme Truth (Bhagavan or God), daily and constantly, not for a few days or a few weeks, but uninterruptedly throughout life, to that yogi who is ever steadfast in thought, I am easily accessible. Therefore we must always be at it, if we want to succeed. We must always call Bhagavan to mind and not allow other thoughts to interfere. We must always try to live in the presence of God.
