Tulsidas Jayanti celebrates the birthday of Goswami Tulsidas who is the author of the Ramcharitmanas. Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti 2024 date is August 12. The original Valmiki Ramayana in Sanskrit was only understood by scholars and it was Tulisdas’s Ramcharitmanas in Hindi that popularized the epic in Hindi heartland in India. The life of Tulsidas is noted for numerous miracles, which includes his meeting with Lord Hanuman and the subsequent darshan of Lord Ram with the help of Hanuman. It is widely believed that Lord Hanuman helped Tulsidas in composing the Ramcharitmanas. There are also people who believe that he is an incarnation of Sage Valmiki.

Importance of Ramcharitmanas in the Hindu world

Today, Ramayan of Tulsidas is read daily and worshipped with great reverence by Hindus in North India. Ramcharitmanas is not a literal translation of Valimiki Ramayana. Keeping the main incidents in the life of Lord Ram intact, Tulsidas has made vital changes and there is an emphasis on bhakti in Tulsi Ramayana.

His Contribution

It is accounted that Tulsidas wrote twelve books and the most famous is the Ramcharitmanas. It is a major literary work in Hindi and has played a major role in developing the language. The literary work is noted for it rhyming couplets.

Hanuman Chalisa, the popular prayer dedicated to Hanuman, was composed by Tulsidas Ji.

How is the day celebrated?

On the Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti day, Ramcharitmanas is read in temples of Lord Ram and Hanuman.  Numerous seminars are also held on the day in North India. Speeches on the life of the great poet saint is given by scholars and students.

Sadly, nowadays few people remember the day. And slowly we are forgetting a man who played a vital role in developing our National Language.
