What Is Unmai Vilakkam?

Unmai Vilakkam is a work on Saiva Siddhanta in Tamil by Manivasagam. Kadanadar is one among the fourteen Shaiva philosophical texts in Tamil, known as Meykandar Shastras (sacred literature on Truth). This work contains fifty four verses with an invocatory song addressed to Ganapathi Bhagavan. It is in the form of questions and answers. The author himself puts several questions to his preceptor, Saint Meikanda Devar, and gets the answers from him. The questions are as follows – What is the nature of thirty six categories (tattvas)? What is the significance of egoity (anava)? What is the role of moral acts (karma)? What is the nature of the self? Who is God who appears as a preceptor? What is the significance of the cosmic dance of Lord Nataraja and how does one understand it? What is the symbolic meaning of the five-lettered holy mantra na-ma-si-va-ya (Prostrations unto Siva)? What is the nature of liberation? The answers to these questions are expounded by the preceptor. The thirty

Udyotakara

Udyotakara is the author of Nyaya Varttika, the earliest extant commentary on Nyaya Bhashya by Vatsyayana. Udyotakara refers to a Buddhist treatise on logic called Vada-vidhi in his Nyaya-Varttika. This seems to be another name of Vada Nyaya by Dharmakirti. Similarly, Dharmakirti also refers to Udyotakara’s Varttika in his Nyaya-bindu. Udyotakara and Dhamakirti, who thus seem to have referred to each other, were, in the opinion of S.C. Vidyabhushana, contemporaries and flourished about 635 CE. Udyotakara’s family name was Bharadvaja, and in the colophon of Nyaya-Varttika he is styled as Pasupatacharya. According to Vdiyabhushana, his reference in Nyaya Varttika to Srughna, a town situated near Thanvesvar, the capital of Harshavardhana, give us a clue either to the place of Udoyotakara’s birth or to his patronage by Harshavardhana. But D.N. Shastri is of the view that his reference may be due to the fame of that place. Subandhu’s Vasavadatta is a good piece of evidence for Udyotakar

Udyan – Parks In Ancient Hindu Religion

Udyan is artistically laid out parks in ancient Hindu religion and are mentioned even in Vedas. Udyanas could be natural or artificial. They were generally created by rulers or rich merchants for their amusement, or located in and around temples. Udyanas were grassy lands with groves of trees and flowering plants, both artificially cultivated and naturally grown, on the bank of lakes. References to udyanas are found in Rig Veda. The picturesque udyanas in the Lanka of Ravana are known from the epic Ramayana. The Nandanvan of Indra, the Caitraratha udyana of Kubera, and the Upavana of Kaikeyi are described in poems with epic grandeur. Udyana is also mentioned in Atharva Veda. The tradition of udyana layout goes back to 2000 BCE. Sanskrit literature is rich with descriptions of pushpavatikas and udyanas. It was considered an important duty of the Indian kings to create reserved udyanas for the sake of hunting. Udyanas were raised in or around temples as well. The lakes inside royal

Udgitha Vidya

Udgitha Vidya is the art of worshiping the three-syllable omkara. It has been expounded in Brahmasturabhashya and Chandogya Upanishad. It is the second part of Samaveda. Omkara is recited with musical intonation and, therefore, udgitha. The Tamil hymns of Nammalvar are considered an illustration of udgitha vidya. The body of udgitha is bhakti (devotion) and the vidya is to be initiated by a guru for its success. The origin of udgitha is said to be as follows – Bhutarasa (the flavor of five elements) produces prithvirasa (earth). This results in aparasa (water) as the base. Ausadhirasa is generated from water and represents medicinal plants and herbs. This, in turn, creates purusarasa (the Supreme Being), leading to vakrasa (speech). This leads to rkrasa (hymns or verses), leading to samarasa (soothing life). This emanates udgitha, the cream of Sama Veda. Sages like Angirasa, Brihaspati, and Dalbhya are said to have practiced this vidya by breathing good air, speaking only good word

Uddiyana Bandha In Yoga

Uddiyana Bandha is a type of contraction of muscles in Yoga. Bandha literally means binding. In hatha yoga there are bandhas or locks which involve tight contraction of some muscles and body parts. Four such bandhas are described in traditional texts. Uddiyana bandha is very important among them. Uddina means to jump. This bandha gets its name from the fact that in it two things are said to jump upward, namely, thoracic diaphragm and the vital air, prana. The technique and usefulness of this bandha is described in detail in Hatha Yoga Pradipika (III.56-60) and in many other texts. It is said to be the best among all the bandhas (III.60) Uddiyana Bandha may be practiced along with pranayama (breath control) or independently. In pranayama it may be practiced while holding the breath in or out. As an independent practice it may be done in a sitting or standing position, and only when holding the breath out. The hands are pressed on the knees, the body is bent slightly forward and exhali

Uday In Hindu Horoscope

Uday is the rise of the sun, suryodaya, and that of the moon, chandrodaya, play an important role in the horoscope of a person. Uday means coming up to a level. The sun’s rise comes into view two minutes earlier than the actual timing of rising because sun rays undergo refraction. The sun even rises when it is actually half a degree below the horizon. Now, at this virtual rise of the sun, the other planets are yet to rise. So, with reference to other planets, the day has already begun. The same phenomenon happens when the sun sets. Due to the refraction effect, the sun sets two minutes later than the actual timing. Thus the day is increased by four minutes in all. The period from one sunrise to another at the same place is called a day. Hence there is a difference between a day at a place and the twenty-four-hour-day of a clock. This difference is called velantara. The velantara, the precession of the sun at the vernal equinox (chara period)and the degree of refraction at a place,

The way is by realizing that the pleasures they give us is impermanent, that indulgence in them invariably brings disgust, disease and suffering on its heels. Says Mrs Annie Besant, ‘Argument would not do it, reasoning would not do it, but when men have had the experience, when men have gratified their taste to the full, when they have become gluttonous, presently they will find that they have made their bodies miserable, their lives one long suffering, that diseases result from the gratification they have experienced, that the gratification brings pain as a result; then they will no longer desire to gratify themselves in that way and the root of desire will be cut away. … You can only get rid of it by gradually realizing through experience the knowledge that the gratification of all desire which is not going upwards is a womb of pain and brings fo
