Ariyannur Harikanyaka temple is located at Ariyannoor near Guruvayur in Thrissur district, Kerala. This is an ancient temple dedicated to Bhagavan Vishnu – Mohini form of Vishnu is worshipped in the shrine. The annual festival in the temple is held in Meena Masam (February – March). This is one of the rare temples exclusively dedicated to Mohini Avatar of Vishnu.
The temple is famous for its mural paintings, sculptures and stone carvings (most of them are lost or in really bad shape). The shrine was built by the legendary Perumthachan. His chisel (uli) can be seen on the back side of the sanctum sanctorum.
The temple has a two tier sanctum sanctorum – Chathura sreekovil with numerous sculptures. The granite Adhishtana of the temple has ornate walls made of laterite. A traditional Namaskara mandapam, Nalambalam, Thidappalli, Balikkalppura are part of the temple.
The murti of Goddess worshipped in the temple is nearly 5 feet tall. There is also a pratishta of Ayyappa in the main sreekovil. The sankalpam of Goddess is that of Kanyaka or Virgin.
During the annual festival, female elephants carry the Thidambu of Bhagavan. Kshatriyas and male elephants are not permitted inside the temple. Daily arattu is performed during the annual festival. Ariyannur Sastha accompanies during the arattu procession. Sastha should be present along with the Devi whenever She is taken out for procession.
The shrine is located on a hill and is a Mahakshetram. The annual festival in the temple is observed for 14 days. The festival concludes with Arattu on Moolam nakshatra in Makaram month. On the pooram nakshatra day during the festival, Kozhukattai is offered to Ganpati – now Ada is offered. Pooram festival is held on Pooram nakshatra day in Meena masam. The rice flour needed for the festival is brought atop an elephant from Moozhikulam temple.
The temple finds mention in the Chandrotsavam a Manipravalam kavyam and chakora sandesham all written in the 14th and 15th century CE.
The upa devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathy, Ayyappa, Shiva, Goddess Bhadrakali and Nagas.
Instead of Dwarapalakas, the temple has female forms known as Dwarapalikas.
The temple is associated with the Chowalloor Temple, during the annual 41-day Mandalakalam, Navakam is held for 30 days at Ariyannur temple and the rest 11 days are held at Chowalloor temple.
