Thalappoli Festival at Parakkottukavu Devi
Temple is observed on the
last Sunday in Meda Masam (April – May). Parakkottukavu Thalappoli 2025 date is May 11. The Thalappoli is part of the most
important temple festival at the shrine located at Thiruvilwamala in Kerala. The festival is also famous for
Vedikettu or fireworks.
The festival includes ezhunnallathu of the deity atop a caparisoned elephant accompanied by the traditional ensemble of Panchavadyam
and melam, performance of traditional art forms such as Poothan, Thira,
Kari Vesham, effigies and kala vela.
A total of 21 elephants participate in the annual pooram festival. Three villages in the region arrive at the temple with 7 elephants each. The three desams Padinjattumuri , Kizhakkumuri and Pampady competes in a very healthy manner to make the pooram a grand spectacle.

Thalappoli is a unique feature of temple festival in Kerala.
Girls, unmarried women and married women carry lighted lamps and move in a
procession to the temple. It is performed for peace and prosperity.
Thousands of people from nearby villages and towns arrive to
witness the festival which is also famous for display of caparisoned elephants
and fireworks.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and is an
important Shakti Shrine in the region.
