Sitali Karana – Breathing Exercise In Yoga

Sitali karana is derived from the refreshing cooling effect it has on the body which results from breathing performed through the mouth instead of the nose. Sitali karana is a breathing exercise in yoga. The position or posture to be adopted is padmasana, siddhasana or one may sit cross-legged. The tongue should protrude roughly one inch over the lips. It takes the form of a freshly rolled leaf about to open, i.e., folded lengthwise both inside and outside the mouth. The performer should inhale by drawing in the air through the channel formed by the tongue, making a sibilant second until the lungs are completely filled. Once inhalation is accomplished, the tongue is drawn in, the lips closed and the breath held for several second. The air is let out slowly through the nose. This completes the cycle. This cyclic exercise should be repeated two or three times, followed by complete relaxation. Initially, this exercise should be performed twice or thrice and gradually the number of cycle

Kamya Karma In Hinduism

In Hinduism the religious rites that help in fulfillment of desires is known as Kamya Karma. It is resorted to when certain desires cannot be satisfied through normal human endeavor. The scriptures advise the performance of certain religious rites and rituals that invoke divine intervention. Different rituals and yagnas like jyotistoma and candrayana vrata belong to the category of Kamya Karmas. Kamya Karma (s) are divided into two classes – those which are ordained by the scriptures and those which are nishiddha (forbidden). Rituals like Agnihotra and Jyotistoma belong to the former category, while those like drinking wine and human sacrifice are forbidden karnas. The philosophy of “inquiry into karma”, i.e., Karma Mimamsa, discusses the nature and purpose of Vedic rites, their primary and secondary character and sequential performance with their results. It also states the methods by which these karmas have to be performed and the results of their performance. Kamya Karma(s) ha

Janmashtami Quotes and Thoughts

In an article written on Janmashtami, Swami Chinmayananda, symbolically explores the meaning of Sri Krishna Jayanti or Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna. This supreme essence born as a mass of beauty, music and joy, dazzling in wisdom, noisy with laughter, ever a master of circumstances, a king of events, frisking about in life’s melancholy contentions, meeting challenges with daring and confidence, at once a hero and a child all rolled in one – this is the perfect God-man, the eternal child of Vrindavan. Krishna is Truth. He was born in the quite heart-caves of the Rishis. Those Rishis gradually transmitted their knowledge to their disciples. Thus Krishna was removed from the prison to Yasoda’s house – the disciple’s. There is no pain in this unique delivery. The Guru gives out the child without the agony of labor pains. While we are sleeping in fatigue and exhaustion, wearied in production and destruction, we know not, that there is

Sitkari Pranayama

Sitkari is an uncommon pranayama. One outstanding feature of this variety is puraka (inhalation) with sit (sound), which is called sitka in Sanskrit. For producing this sound, the tip of the tongue is kept in touch with the back side of the upper front teeth. The lips are parted slightly and puraka is done through the mouth, the sit sound being produced by the friction of the air with the surface and the sides of the tongue. Puraka is done slowly, then the mouth is shut and the breath is held inside, applying the three bandhas, namely mulabandha (anal lock), uddiyana bandha (abdominal lock) and jalandhara bandha (chin lock). After holding the breath inside, recaka (breathing out) is done through both nostrils. The time taken by the three acts or components of pranayama is in the proportion of 1:2:2 in the beginning of practice and 1:4:2 after a few months practice. Svatmarama has praised this variety of pranayama in his Hatha Yoga Pradipika (II.53-55), saying that by the practice of

(Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7 Verse 19) To reach that highest knowledge, the supreme realization that God is the soul of all beings, requires many lives of preparation.
