Paush Month – Posh Mahina 2011 in Traditional Gujarati Calendar

Posh Mahina, also known as Paush Maas or Poush Month, is the third month in traditional Gujarati calendar. Uttarayan – the daytime of Devas – begins in this month. Other important auspicious days in the month include Makar Sankranti and Poush Purnima. Dhanurmas also ends in this month. In 2011, Paush Mahina begins on January 5, 2011 and ends on February 4, 2011. Paush Purnima is on January 19, 2011. Poush Amavasi in Gujarati Calendar is on February 2 and February 3. There is a Surya Grahan on northwestern parts of India on January 4. Putrada Ekadasi, Shakambari Jayanti and Shattila Ekadasi are also observed in the month. It must be noted that Paush Month in traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India begins December 22, 2010 and ends on January 19, 2011. Paush Month in traditional Marathi , Telugu and Kannada calendar is the same as Gujarati Calendar.

Yellu Amavasya – Ellu Amavasi

Yellu Amavasya or Ellu Amavasi is an important festival observed by farming community in South India, especially in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In 2017, date of Yellu Amavasya is December 18. Observed on the no moon day in Margashirsh month (December – January), it is a festival to thank the mother earth for a good harvest. Yellu means sesame and Amavas means no moon day.

Yellu is also believed to represent Lord Shani and is offered by people to get rid of Shani Dosha. On Yellu Amavasai day, special food is prepared and is offered to Mother Earth by farmers. An important ceremony on the day is the spraying of sesame and jaggery all around the farmlands. There is a belief that the sesame and jaggery are food for the worms in the farmland.

Special vegetarian dishes using pulses and green leaves are prepared on the day. Some of the dishes prepared include bajje, pundi, chikki, palak, menthe, rajgiri, bartha, jowar kadabu and sajje kadabu. All the agricultural laborers gather on the …
