Chamba Shasti

Champa Shasthi, also known as Chambasasti or Chamba Sasthi, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed on the 6th day in the month of Margashirsh in Maharashtra and other regions. In 2016, the date of Chamba Shasti is December 5. The day is of great significance at Jejuri near Pune, which has a temple dedicated to Martand also known as Malhari or Khandoba or Kanderao. Lord Shiva took the form of Martand to destroy two demons named Mani and Malla.

Sasti, or Shashthi, is the sixth day in a lunar fortnight in Hindu calendar and is mainly dedicated to Lord Muruga or Subrahmanya.

Legend has it that two demons named Mani and Malla became powerful by performing intense Tapas (austerities) dedicated to Brahma. After several years Brahma gave them boons. With unimaginable power on their disposal, Mani and Malla started harassing demi gods and humans. They created havoc and disturbed the peaceful life on earth and heaven.

Sri Dattatreya Jayanti – Datta Jayanthi

Datta Jayanti, or Dattatreya Jayanthi, celebrates the birth of Adi Guru Dattatreya, the Trimurti Avatar – the united and single incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In 2016, the date of Dattatreya Jayanti is December 13. Dattatreya was born as the son of Atri Maharshi and Anasuya. Datta Jayanthi is observed on the full moon day in the month of Margashirsh.

Anasuya, the wife of Sage Atri, was a pious lady and performed intense austerities to beget a son with qualities of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Above all Anasuya was noted for her Pativrata Dharma – unparalleled devotion to her husband.

To test her Pativrata Dharma, the Trimurtis appeared in the guise of three Sanyasins and asked her to give food in nude. This put Anasuya in a great dilemma. Confident of her Dharma, the pious lady took some water and sprinkled it on the three Sanyasins in order to clean their feet before giving food. Immediately, the three Sanyasins were transformed into three babies.

Sage Vashishta teachings on Peace

Make yourself simple. Learn to be quiet rather than hyperactive. Do not mistake peace for an object that you attain. Rather, understand that peace is a mental state. That mental state is always present. However, mind, through your own self-created noise you disturb that state of stillness, which is called peace. Only you yourself can remove that disturbance.VashishtaSource: The Tradition of the Himalayan Masters Pandit Rajmani, Ph.D. Tigunait
