Kaniyada Sree Cheralath Bhagavathy Devasthanam Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Kaniyada Sree Cheralath Bhagavathy Devasthanam temple is located at Kaniyada near Kayyur in Kasaragod district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavathy, Chamundi, Vishnumoorthi and numerous other deities. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is observed for two days in Malayalam Thula Masam – Thulam 21 to Thulam 22 (November 6 to November 7).

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Kaniyada Sree Cheralath Bhagavathy Devasthanam temple (കണിയാട തായത്തറക്കാല്‍ ശ്രീ ചെറളത്ത് ഭഗവതി  ദേവസ്ഥാനം കളിയാട്ടമഹോത്സവം) are Cheralath Bhagavathy theyyam, Vishnumoorthi, Raktha Chamundi and Padarkulangara Bhagavathi.

The main deities are worshipped in a Chathura sreekovil – square sanctum sanctorum. Some deities are worshipped atop small square platforms and under trees. There are other smaller sreekovils. The roofs of the small sanctum are decorated traditionally. The temple performs special pujas and rituals on Sankranti day. This is a family maintained private temple.
