Deepal Chopra on Rituals

Rituals are a way for families to feel that they belong together as one mind and heart. You cannot help but feel close when you sit down to a meal that everyone enjoys or attend a party where everyone shares the same excitement and happiness. Lighting the diya is a quieter experience, but it has the same effect. It unites people at a level of reverence.
Rituals should never be empty. They remind us who we are. If we come from the light, an oil lamp can remind us, once a day at least, of who we really are. Everyday existence is hectic and full of distractions. Caught up in activities, everyone gets distracted. So it is good to find your center for a moment, and performing a ritual does that for many people. Deepak Chopra
